I no its long but (bear) with me. parden the pun:)

hey guys i have a story from elk hunting this year. I was sitting about 60 yards infront of my dad and he was making elk mews hoping to get an elk within range for me. We had got in about a half hour before light. when it was light enough to shoot my dad began the calling. After about a half hour Im hearing movment all over in the valley below and to the right and left of me! I now hear movement maybe 35 yards to the left behind some trees. At this point im thinking EEEELLLKKK i get my bow in position and im just waiting for the animal to appear in my vision! then it happens instead of seeing a big bull or cow, i see a huge set of blackbear paws then the 400-500lb blackbear at a trout on the trail in which i was sitting. Im thinking ohh noooo what now? luckely i had a black bear tag this year! It is now closing at about 20 yards. I pull back the bear stops i put my 20 pin right on his sternum ( probly not the best shot but i had no other choice with a black bear coming right at me. ) and release my arrow PERFECT FLIGHT untill it hits a small branch about 10 feet in front of him! And now the bear has began at a full charge strait for me!!!

im thinking fight or flight now! I chose the wrong one in this case. flight i stand up, to my luck slipping on a patch of wet grass and falling on my face. i look over and the bear was about 7 yards now. So i stand up again and when i got to full stand the bear spooked breaking logs small trees and smashing its own trail down to the bottom of the valley!!! so i wait tell he is gone and run up to my dad panting with such an adrenaline rush i couldent speek.

At first my dad thought i was an elk and allmost drew back! but he saw me came down and said did you shoot an elk??? i said no i got charged by a black bear! he says did you get a shot off? YA!! lets go look for blood. so we walk down the trail and find my arrow stuck in a tree probly 6 inches above were the bears head was.

were bying bear pepper spray for next year!! its suposed to be more effective than a large cal. pistol which is illegal for us to carry even for protection (stupid law!)

elk mews will call cougar in too. you need to watch each others backs any more when you're calling like that.
wild bear usually will do just what that one did. run away fast when they see it's a human! usually you can just get big, yell loud and wave your arms and they will sell out. i don't think that bear saw you until you fell and got up. running is the wrong thing with a bear or cougar. could trigger an attack. both try to avoid a fight, so looking big and mean is pretty effective.
base of the neck isn't a bad shot on a bear if thats all you've got. right where the neck hits the body.
hope you get an elk next time!

ya thats what we figured was when i stood up it scared him because im 6 4 soo. and its funny because thats exactly what people allways tell you to do is get big and make loud noises. Ive heard that several times from people, but in the momment it never even crossed my mind. scary stuff but i would have done it all over again if it had the same outcome that is!

The spray is a good back-up just in case the bear doesn't deflect from or abandon the charge. It's the last resort when the bear is almost on you, but there's no substitute for extreme vigilence when imitating prey in the bear's woods.

I don't do cow calls in grizzly country, but even up here in the Breaks I've managed to attract a few lions with them - same drill: stand up and let them see clearly you are a human; and accompanying that with a nice strong yell is good insurance. The yelling seems to be automatic most times.:)
