I have been reading some books by some the "long gone" archers of the old days, (ie Howard Hill, ect.) , and some of them put names on their favorite bow (ie Whisper stick) or Gran'pa in Howard Hill's case. I thought it might be kinda cool to name mine. Does anyone else name their bow? I posted this on another forum, and it seems I'm all alone here . If not, I could use some help in choosing a name for my bow. thanks bowhuntrmaniac

My very first custom bow a Mahaska wasn't really named but more of a remembrance dedicated to my daughter Christina who was taken from me the day after her 8th birthday. My youngest sons first custom longbow made a Maddog Pup has his sisters name on it also,he wanted Nina on his because that was what he called her when he was about 3 when she passed.I don't hunt much with the Mahaska anymore only because i want to hand it down to my boy when he get's strong enough to pull it back.

My Fox Triple Crown longbow is named "Ad Astra" which is Latin meaning "To The Stars." It is also a part of the Kansas state moto, and the name of our family farm. As a side note, on the very top of the Kansas State Capitol Building in Topeka is a huge bronze statue of a Kanza Indian brave shooting a longbow into the sky.

you have my bow!

'Cept I shortened it it to "crap!" And sometimes "not again!"-- referring to my Sage. My 30 lb York longbow is named Peppermint.

I reckon my next bow will have a proper name, but it will find its name- it won't be my choice.

I only named 1 of my many autos.. a D100 Dodge Prospector, 76 kingcab. The E washed off along with the FOR. So the truck became known as SAL.

i don't even really name my cow dogs and horses. once i was riding for cattle with eneas shockley and i heard one of my dogs go out from under my horse and said, "boomer, get under there!" eneas reined his horse close and said, "what did you call that dog?" i said, "boomer, he walks loud", eneas replied, "all these years i thought that dogs name was #$%@^&*** you!"
feel the same about my bows.

I mostly like or feel acquainted with Larry's approach....
...though at present I'm calling my Fred Bear Mag Handle A Riser "Fred"...."he" is getting special acknowledgement...
regarding dogs and my children...I love them more than any d*mn*d old bow (especially my kids)....but have used many a profane word/words when they did not quite behave to my tastes...perhaps this is more a reflection of my short comings than theirs...
Anyway...I can see calling a trusted bow by a pet name...if its owner has experienced many joyous times in the field or range with it.
I refer to my Grandfather's old .22-250 as "old sure thing" or "old sure shot" if I take her out to put meat in the freezer. That old rifle has filled many a freezer....
I'll probably do the same with other bows..other than "Fred" if I become a better bowhunter...
...So...Yes!!! some of us name a bow at times... nothing wrong with that at all!!
:)

I have 2 custom recurves handmade by my father and I have named them both. The first one is 58" 60# @ 26" it is a beast and my go-to hunting bow which I rightfully named "BOWhemuth". Dad gave this to me for Christmas 3 years ago. The second is 64" 62# @ 26" I named it "Tallboy" beacuse I was enjoying a tallboy while shooting it well on my range at home and thought the name suited it well cuz Im only 5'9" and this bow feels huge to me but I shoot it well. Both bows have been chronographed at over 200 fps with dacron strings and heavy arrows so the names suit them well.

I've named a number of my tools. My Sawzall is Big Red, my Estwing 20-ounce is Sure-shot, and my 4# cross-peen hammer is named Mjolnir. Got a few other tools with names, too... Mind you, I worked construction a number of years, so I might have a deeper relationship with some of those tools. They put meat in the freezer as much as any gun, bow, or pistol did.

I guess in many ways if you develop a deeper relationship with something, you impart some anthropomorphic tendencies toward said inanimate something. Naming something you can really trust and rely on seems "right".

Do I need a name for each riser/limb combination I use?

Is the riser and limbs the same entity or do they exist in a symbiotic relationship?

And what of the arrows? Are they just waist given off by the bow?

Hey guys, After a little research this weekend , I decided to name my bow "Kohana Paloma" . Kohana is Sioux for "swift" and Paloma is Choctaw(my grandfather) for "bow" , so "swift bow" . Mind you I am sure there are a lot of bows that are faster, but I think the name is kinda neat . Thanks for all of your thoughts and input! May the wind always be in your face.
