Hi,

Recently I saw some pictures of old Hoyt Radian / Talon risers. Since I kinda like the looks of these risers, I'd like to pick up a used 25'' LH sooner or later...

The question is - do you think it was a good model and worth buying?

Oh and BTW, I mean it for barebow target shooting.

Cheers

The Radian is a super riser if you like a very small aka torque-free grip or have small hands. The back of the grip is slightly angular and requires a open hand to be shot comfortably, IMHO.

I really like the riser (I have a 23" and a 25"), but you have to understand what you're dealing with. It was Hoyts' first machined aluminum riser, before they figured out stress relieving. Therefore, a number of the Radians have a factory issued twist to them, some more severe than others. Again, these where made before Hoyt figured out they need a lateral limb alignment system to compensate for the aforementioned twist.

With the old Radians, unless you know where it's coming from it's a good idea to see it before you buy it.

I have a left hand 1995 Talon #55@28.
This is set up is a hunting bow with pin sights and a foot long stabilizer all original.
Could you describe how to figure out if the riser has a twist in it?
I want to sell this bow but not if it has a problem.

Short Draw...If your string tracks down the center of the limbs and the string grooves your riser is fine and your good to go. If it doesn't track dead center try another pair of limbs and if they are straight and the string still doesn't tract you have one of the factory twisted risers. Shims on one side or the other of the pocket bottom can usually correct the tracking problem if one is there. Most of the original twisted risers were recalled but I'm sure there are a few still out there, I never have seen one though...warf

Another thing to bear in mind is that they are "old tech" --- at least in the area of the Hunting limbs. I've owned 2 sets of the original Talon Hunter limbs---super short and very strong 60-70# range. However they have been far surpassed by more modern ILF limb technology.

I got'em figuring to make a real super-killer WARF for the long range bear target novelty shoot at the Compton and was rather dumfounded to find that my later ILf limbs pulling as much as 15# less draw weight would out shoot them interms of velocity and trajectory.

they are neat limbs and someday I hope to pick up a Talon riser to add to my collection---but like my old Kodiak Magnum, it'll be more to "have" than to shoot.

Shortdraw---bring it to Compton if you have space, I'm not a southpaw so I can't shoot it; but I'd really like to look at it.

Pretty much what Bob said. At first glance it will look a litte like a twisted limb. Careful inspection might reveal the riser twist, but swaping out the limbs should confirm it. Also try screwing in a long stab, as some risers had the twist around stab bushing. If the stab veres off to one side, it's twisted.

I've never owned a pair of the Talon x-shorts, but I gotta tell ya, the better Hoyt limbs c. early 1990s (C+, Vectors, FX etc) are a good match for almost anything out there today, certainly better than Hoyt's offerings of late. I don't buy the new tech stuff, at least from my experience.

Viper, I totally agree. the C+ and the FX are about as good as it gets in my opinion---in spite of having one set of FX blow up on me. I'd still grab a set especially if they seemed "low cycle" to me.
---of course the ones that blew looked a lot newer than the older worn-looking set that have worked fine for a number of years on several different WARFS.

Pictures are in the trading blanket.

The bow seems solid and no twist in the riser.
The string follows in the slots really nice.

This bow looks like it was never used.
