The Hoyt Buffalo is among the finest shelf shooting 19" metal risers one could ever hope for, and I'll arm wrestle anyone that says otherwise. The shelf and window radiusing, the low placement of the arrow to the hand, makes it an incredible point-and-shoot riser. There's no other metal riser I've shot that to me feels better off the shelf.
But the Achilles' Heel of this riser is the fact it only takes Formula limbs. And so half the time it's collecting dust because - unlike the riser - the Hoyt Traditional limbs that it came with are average at best. I've 100 dollar limbs that shoot better.
So when I first heard about an adapater converting Formula to ILF I bookmarked it right away, on my archery bucket list. I finally got around to buying it, not without some hesitation. Worried about quality, tolerances and centering, and whether it would take the weight of limbs I wanted to shoot on it.
All my fears were for nothing. This is some excellent kit and it has completely revolutionised my Buffalo.
I bought the adapters on Aliexpress here. They came in about 2 weeks to my fairly remote location - pretty quick.
Straight out of the pack they felt solid/heavy. The hardware seemed good quality, CNC'd and anodised tough alloy (I don't know which).
The idea is that you effectively extend the shorter ILF limb butt to have the reach of a Formula limb. To do this you take the ILF dovetail cap off, sit the adapter over the limb, and then bolt it on using their longer bolt through their cap. At the base you use their other bolt to lock the other end of your limb down to the adapter. The result is that the limb is held fast and flush to the adapter at two locations.
I decided to use my Buck Trail Elite 3K cross-carbon limbs (45lb @ 19") for the test.
I slotted them onto my trust Buffalo riser and was very pleased to see perfect centering for these limbs. Smack down the middle of the tiller bolt holes on the belly.
Personally I think they look great on the Buffalo. Some pics:
One thing to note is that due to their weight they shift mass on the riser, and it didn't at first feel like the Buffalo I know so well. But the mass is not in a bad place (forward mass), and the bow is even more dead in hand. After getting a quick bareshaft tune together I found my new frankenbuffalo to shoot beautifully.
TBH I'm overjoyed I can finally use ILF limbs on my Buffalo. These cleverly designed and well made adapters have breathed new life into what is perhaps my favourite 19" riser of all. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone with the Hoyt Buffalo, and perhaps for any other Hoyt Formula riser they have that could benefit from the exciting world of ILF limbs.
Cheers,
Remote
