In a previous discussion about corporate sponsorships of archers, it was implied that such relationships might be "unethical."

It was also suggested that I needed to do a little research, and then apparently my opinion of these relationships might change.

Well, I did a little research and all I have to say is WOW. I have no ties to Hoyt/Easton other than to say that I've shot some of their products, which by the way, I always paid full price for.

I never realized to what extent this company actually does put their money where their mouth is. For every Brady Ellison, Jake Kaminski and
Khatuna Lorig, there are thousands and thousands of others that benefit from the generosity of this, and other companies like them.

In my opinion, this is something to be admired and celebrated, not the opposite. Is it self serving? Probably to a certain extent, but what company isn't in business to make profit? Many of the lives that this foundation touched and continues to touch with archery (and other sports) will never buy a product for them. As a matter of fact, some will probably go on to be staff shooters for their competition. They know this, they understand it, and they also realize that a rising tide lifts all boats.

Thank you to all the companies that choose to give back. The future of our sport depends on your generosity.

Great companies giving back that's for sure

But most large companies do similar things

Charitable donations and grants are tax deductible

This is big business

Plus promoting archery in youth organizations is only a good thing for the industry

Technically customer farming

Great and positive things

Totally agree.

Just like regular farming, the only crop you have in the fall, is the one you plant in the spring. Even so, the birds will get some, the ***** will get some, and some will die, but every good farmer knows that you only reap what you sow.

The notion, or the suggestion that this is somehow unethical confuses me.

If Brady Ellison is paid to plant seeds, that doesn't take away from the fact that a lot of people will enjoy the harvest.

I do not think anyone ever said sponsoring youth groups or archers was unethical

I think and I can only speak for the way I read the original threads was that there might be a question when it comes to governing bodies and rules

I have no personal knowledge of these things so I can only speculate

Lets not forget Hoyt's dedication to the sport began with Earl Hoyt Jr and when Hoyt/Easton took the reins, Mr Earl and Mrs Ann donated cash and equipment at Sky Archery out of proportion considering Sky's relative small company size.

What Hoyt/Easton does is called "perpetuating the sport of archery".

Kudos to Hoyt/Easton.
Easton/Hoyt is not the Easton Foundation. The Easton Foundation is the Easton family.

While archery got the family business started, archery is not what made them enough money to start a foundation. That money came from spinning off the baseball bat and hockey stick business into another company (which now owns Bell helmets and Riddell).

The Easton foundation is not corporate sponsorship, it is individual patronage.

Good for you Sylvan!… GREAT come back!

Tom
It wasn't intended to be a "come back" as much as an acknowledgement Tom.

I at least try to do my research prior to giving an opinion, and it was another poster that inspired me to do just that.

In my opinion, the notion that sponsoring Brady Ellison is any different than sponsoring a 4H archery club or a church club, is just not accurate. Far from it actually. If seeing Brady, cool tattoos, soul patch and all, inspires one young person to take up archery, it's worth it. After all, that young person that was inspired by Brady, or Khatuna, or the Hunger Games, or whatever, is going to get involved in a church group, a school archery club, and might just become the next staff shooter or spokesperson for WW, PSE, Border, or Black Widow.

Let's face it. There isn't an archer, bowyer, archery manufacturer, or retailer in existence today that hasn't benefited or profited from the work of Hoyt/Easton.

In my opinion, we need to acknowledge and celebrate that, not condemn it.

Hi Sylvan,

I appreciate your contributions to a thoughtfull conversation. There are many dimensions to building brand awareness and loyalty. The quality of the product is only one dimension. It is of course possible to misrepresent or inflate or falsely claim inovation with regard to product performance and at the same time do an outstanding job building brand loyalty through traditional marketing, social, PR, or philanthropy.

There is an ethical line with marketing having to do with the truthfulness of the marketing claims. I believe companies need to be held to a very high standard of truthfullness with regard to claims about performance, innovation and quality. Performance claims need to be data driven and fact based. On the other hand spinning or positioning a product based on market segment, style, look, or feel is free game as far as I am concerned.

Good points and I agree. However, at some point, if the claims don't match up with reality in the real world, all the marketing and PR don't mean a lot.

While there can be different opinions among archers, different takes on different designs, and differences in what archers value and look for in their equipment, it's just not conceivable or believable that a company could continue to intentionally mislead and misrepresent, all the while remaining at the top of the heap and the top of the podium for decades.

Lets face it, nobody takes shots at the guy in 9th place. Or, as they say, "people throw rocks at things that shine."

It's been my experience that this is usually the case. Whoever is at the top, that's where the stones are going to be thrown. For quote some time, that's been Hoyt, especially in the United States.

It's not uncommon or even unexpected. Companies have to differentiate themselves in some way.

Unfortunately, we live in a society where if besting the competition on the field of play isn't possible, we attempt to demonize them personally or professionally. If you're big you're bad, and if you win too much, you must be cheating...or at least manipulating the rules in such a way that gives you the advantage.

I believe it is a not-for-profit foundation set up by Jim Easton when he sold Easton Sports. Their mission is to promote archery, primarily Olympic style.
