I've been wanting to go to this event for years and this year will be the year. Archers shoot 2 900 rounds and /or 2 3-d rounds. Tournament is held in St. George, Utah on Oct. 8-11. The event has many other sports being contested at the same time, so, it really is a senior olympics. Anyone else signed up?
I certainly considered traveling to this event after having such a pleasurable time competing at the National Senior Games in Cleveland (of all places) this summer. Please let us know about your performances and and your thoughts regarding the event after you get back home. Best of luck.
You're right on, 55.7 is my average score per end at 60 yards. Do you have a spy in the orchard out here?lol Senior games start at 50 and go in 5 year age groups. Looking at past years results, there has been a gentleman in the 90-94 age group who has torn it up. I hope I can still be out there at that age.
Alan, don't tell me I have to start worrying about you on the Senior circuit as well. I knew you were getting close, but gee-whiz, can't you give us a break?
I shot it last year, it was/is a great event and is expected to have even more shooters this year. I shot in the group with Ed Eliason last year but thankfully this year he goes up an age group and I don't. - John
Well, we got through the official practice day with great weather. It was supposed to be 84 degrees today, but we ended up with an overcast and 72 degrees. The total for the archery group this year is 130 archers. Judging from our first two days here, the city of St, George goes all out for these games. I hope more of you 50 and over archers see fit to attend next year. Highlight of the practice round was shooting against Frank Pearson on our last end at 40 Yards. Frank has always been one of the top freestylers in the country. Shooting on the first line, Frank shot a 3x 59 for his 6 arrows. Shooting on the second line, I shot my first arrow in the 9, then shot 5 straight xs for a 5x 59. Frank took it well, though. Tomorrow starts the actual competition so I'll try to keep everyone updated on scores.
Today was the first scoring day for the 900 round. I really struggled at 60 and 40 for some reason. Final score was 799. Didn't get to see the other scores in barebow as they had us spread out with different styles of shooters to get us to become acquainted with other archers than we would usually shoot with. My target included a male freestyler, a female freestyler, a female olympic style recurver, and me. Tomorrow, we are supposed to be peer grouped. I apologize for not getting other scores but I had some personal things to take care of and left as soon as we finished. I hope those of you 50 and over consider attending this tournament next year because it is one of the best you will go to. Tonight we got to march into the local college stadium with flags for each sport, then were treated to a spectacular stadium show of local talent, fireworks, and an olympian with personal recollections of his journey and motivational words for all the contestants there. This year, more than 10,000 senior athletes are in town contesting 35 sports. More news tomorrow.
I wasn't even aware of this competition, sounds great! Hope your struggles and effort put you on the podium Ben! Represent the Western States well my friend!
Thanks Larry, been wanting to get here for several years and finally made it. I'm going to be putting a lot of pressure on you guys to attend next year and build up the archery crowd.
Well, today was a day where the elements won! Got to the range around 8:00 am and the wind was blowing in the 25-35 mile range. It didn't let up by 9 so we shot 60 and 50 in a very strong right to left wind . One end at 50, I shot 2-10s and 2-9s, then was hit by a strong gust and blanked the arrow. The next arrow, the same thing happened, but, I outsmarted the wind by getting a 6!lol. One thing I learned today was that that strong of a wind really impacts the recurve barebow shooters. Shot with a good group of guys from Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado. Considering the severity of the wind, I was happy with my score of 775. The freestylers were really struggling, scorewise. The other recurvers were mostly 3-d shooters, so they struggled with the longer distances. 1574 was 1st, 1340 was 2nd, and I believe 1129 was 3rd. We have the awards banquet in about an hour, so, hopefully I can report better results then.
