The field archers list is like a 'who's who' of the top names in field archery.

I saw him earlier, Hold on, I may have put one list over the other. I'll correct it.

That's what happened, I superimposed one list over the other. Sorry Ben!

Thanks Matt.

This is where they are going:

Cali is a city that is rich in colonial history, and has a number of landmarks
that provide an interesting look at the cities past. And because of Colombia's
rich diversity in both flora and fauna, there are many places to see our natural
treasures.

Here is a list of some of the many places you can visit in the city.
• The Belalcazar Monument
• Cristo Rey
• San Antonio
• Cali River
• Tres Cruces
• Orchideorama
• The Cali Zoo
The Cali Zoo is considered one of the top five zoos in South America. There is a
spectacular collection of birds, and an amazing butterfly habitat.

Language - Spanish is the primary language and English is seldom
spoken.

Security - like in all big cities you should be aware of your surroundings
at all times. We will provide a list and map of places to go and not go in
subsequent bulletins.

Museums - In culture, Cali is probably best known for Salsa, but there are
a number of museums and theatres that provide year round events. In art,
you can find anything from pre-Colombian antiquities, to contemporary
exhibits.
The theatres provide both ballet and traditional productions.
Some of the more popular places to visit are:
• Modern Art Museum La Tertulia
• Museum of Archeology La Merced
• Municipal Theatre of Cali
• Colonial and Religious Museum of San Antonio
• Museum of Natural Sciences

Restaurants/Neighbourhoods
• San Antonio - Is an old colonial neighborhood that was an extension of
downtown Cali, and a fashionable neighborhood, is now a place where
locals dine at some very nice restaurants that aren't always on the tourist
maps. It's narrow colonial streets offer a glimpse at what Cali used to be
like.
• Granada - Is a neighborhood that was once very residential, but has
become one of the most popular destination spots for a night out in Cali.
It is loaded with great restaurants, and nightclubs.
• Rio Cali - A small river that wanders through the west part of town is
bordered by the neighborhoods of El Penon and Normandia. It's a
nice place to take a walk as well as take in a meal in one of the quiet
plazas that make up the tranquil setting.

Cali is beautiful, but if you've travelled a long way to get to Colombia, there are
many regional areas here that are well worth the time and money to visit. The
following is a condensed list of some of the many attractions you can find here.

• Cartagena and the Atlantic Coast
• The Coffee Growing Region (El Eje Cafetero)
• The Santa Marta Mountains
• The Lost City (Ciudad Perdida)
• The Bogota Area
• The Amazon Region

Colombia is filled with biodiversity, pre-Colombian culture, and breathtaking
scenery. Colombia is what you want it to be. You can explore virgin territory
filled with exotic wildlife, watch pink dolphins swim in the Amazon, or just lay
back and enjoy a cocktail on one of the many beautiful beaches that line the
Atlantic coast from Panama to Venezuela.

Thanks Jason. I've been swamped with work and practice has been spotty but I feel like I'm shooting fair. I've been lucky so far as a friend gave me air miles for the trip and the world games is picking up the tab for the hotel, so ( so far ) the trip has been easy on my pocket book. For those who don't know the format, the top ten finishers at the World Championships last year in France qualified their country for one spot in the world games. The gold medalist ( Spain ) qualified his country for two spots and the host country, Colombia, gets an automatic spot for a total of only 12 spots per shooting style, barebow and olympic. That makes this competition pretty exclusive as their are only 48 shooters, men and women, allowed to compete in field archery at the World games every 4 years. The U.S.A. spot was filled by the winner of the U.S. fita field championships, held in Texas in June. I'm leaving this Sunday, July 28. The good news is that the worst I can do is 12th.;) Congratulations on your shooting in Cloverdale, Champ.

Cali - Friday, July 26, 2013

The Colombian city of Cali is bringing together thousands of athletes from all over the planet for the World Games from 25 July - 4 August.
The Opening Ceremony was held yesterday at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium with about 40,000 spectators and in presence of the IOC President Dr Jacques ROGGE and the IWGA President Mr Ron FROEHLICH. The archery event is starting today with the official practice.

The World Games are a multidisciplinary sport event held since 1981, organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA) under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The World Games are meant for sports, or disciplines within a sport, that are not on the programme of the Olympic Games. At quadrennial intervals, they provide athletes with the opportunity to join with their countrymen and countrywomen from other sports, in the Olympic spirit, and compete as part of a national team at the highest level.

A multitude of popular and spectacular sports are represented in the World Games: from artistic and dance sports, to ball sports, martial arts, precision sports, strength sports, trend sports, and invitational sports. The World Games are the main event for the world's best athletes in these sports - an event marked by search for excellence as well as by camaraderie across all boundaries.

While the IWGA explicitly adheres to all principles in the Olympic Charter, the World Games differ in one important aspect from the Olympic Games: the event is to be staged at already existing venues. This condition influences the composition of the World Games programme - not all sports feature necessarily on every edition.

The sport of archery, whose recurve division is an Olympic discipline, is represented at the World Games by the compound division and by field archery for the recurve and barebow divisions.

The recurve field archery division could see a battle between former world N°1 Brady ELLISON (USA) and current world field champion Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA), who displayed his great form earlier this month at the third stage of the Archery World Cup in Medellin, where he reached the bronze medal match.

On the women's side, the favourites are world field champion Elena RICHTER (GER), runner-up Zoe GOEBBELS (BEL), runner-up from the last World Games Jessica TOMASI (ITA), Naomi FOLKARD (GBR), third at both the last World Games and the last world field championships, as well as Lisa UNRUH (GER), fourth at the last World Games.

A fantastic field will compete in the compound division. On the men's side the favourites are world N°2 and winner of the Medellin World Cup Reo WILDE (USA), world N°3 Martin DAMSBO (DEN), world record holder Peter ELZINGA (NED), European champion Sergio PAGNI (ITA), former World Cup Final winner Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), World Cup Final bronze medallist Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX), and the French duo Dominique GENET and Pierre-Julien DELOCHE (FRA), who contributed to the French team's gold medal at the Medellin World Cup.

As for the women, double world champion and world N°1 Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) will try to win the title in her first World Games. She will be challenged by the recent World Cup winners from the host country Sara LOPEZ and Alejandra USQUIANO. Other contenders include Medellin runner-up Erika JONES (USA), world silver medallist Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA), European champion Kristina BERGER (GER), world field champion from Croatia Ivana BUDEN (photo), and Medellin bronze medallist Ana MENDOZA (VEN).

The men's barebow division features the top athletes in the world. Will world champion Sebastián JUANOLA (ESP) add another major title to his track record, in his first World Games? He will be challenged, among others, by Italy's Giuseppe SAIMONDI, defending World Games champion and bronze medallist at the last world championships. Watch out also for Olivier ROY (FRA), 4th individually and who impressed in the team competition in Val d'Isere.

On the women's side, competition promises to be tough between world champion Lina BJORKLUND (SWE) and Eleonora STROBBE (ITA), the defending World Games winner who settled for silver in Val d'Isere.

A new world record is the main news for the sport today.

The main news for Colombia was produced by Sara LĂłpez, who with 139 points, defeated Russian Longinova and qualified to the semifinals. The athlete born in Risaralda (Colombia) has in her resume a world record in the 150X category, obtained in the last World Cup at MedellĂn. The other Colombian participant, Alejandra Usquiano, finished eliminated by her rival from the United States by a single point.

The session began with the men's 50m contest, round in which Italian Sergio Pigni was first with a total of 711 points that advanced him to the next round, followed by North-American Reo Wilde.

The men´s individual semifinals were defined after a hot and long day at the Acuaparque De La Caña water-park. The United States, represented once again by Reo Wilde, obtained the best score for this modality with a sum of 147 points, followed by German Titscher and Peter Elzingo, from The Netherlands, with 144 points.

As far as the individual contest in the women´s category, Erika Jones from the U.S.A. got first place rounding-off 704 points and breaking her personal record in the more effective of her two attempts at the 50 meter targets.

Tomorrow´s archery competitions are to be carried out at the former World Championship Skating rink, starting at 10 in the morning.

The United States dominated the compound competition today. In the mixed team event, top qualifiers Erika JONES and Reo WILDE were untouchable. They defeated Medellin runner-ups Camilla SOEMOD and Martin DAMSBO of Denmark in the semi-finals, 154-151. In the final, they challenged Italy's Marcella TONIOLI and Sergio PAGNI, world champions and winners of the last two World Cup stages.

Italy and the USA had met seven times over the last three years, and the USA won six times, but it was Italy who won their last encounter, in June in Antalya, by a large margin. However, Italy had difficulty finding the 10 at the start, whereas the United States were near perfect, starting with 80 points and dropping only 3 points in the second half. Victory 157-152 and first World Games gold medal for Erika JONES and Reo WILDE!

The bronze medal went to Germany, who easily overtook Denmark (154-149), thanks to a solid performance by Paul TITSCHER, who dropped only two points, and European champion Kristina BERGER.

The mixed team finals were followed by the individual semi-finals. JONES returned to the field to face crowd favourite Sara LOPEZ of Colombia. The American archer, who shot a new world record yesterday and placed second at both the Shanghai and Medellin World Cups, was on target for more gold. She trailed Antalya winner LOPEZ through the first three ends, but stole the lead in the fourth end. Even though LOPEZ forced a shoot-off, JONES outscored her 10-9 to advance to the gold medal match.

The second semi-final was between Ivana BUDEN (CRO) and Camilla SOEMOD (DEN). The Danish archer, who won their last five encounters, took a one-point lead from the start, and kept it until the end (143-142). She will meet Erika JONES for the gold, while BUDEN and LOPEZ will face off in the bronze medal match.

The first men's semi-final featured Roberto HERNANDEZ (ESA) and Pierre-Julien DELOCHE (FRA). They met only once in the past, at Ogden 2011, and the winner was DELOCHE. Today, HERNANDEZ started with 10-10-10 to take the lead, but DELOCHE came back with perfect scores in the third and fourth ends. With 28 points in the final end, he opened the door for HERNANDEZ, who needed a 9 to win. After two 10s, the Salvadorian archer shot… 8. Shoot-off! Both athletes delivered a 10 but with an arrow closer to the centre, DELOCHE advanced to the final. He will face world N°2 Reo WILDE, who scored 148 points to defeat Paul TITSCHER (GER) in the other semi-final.

As always, you serve us good with links and photos, Greysides. Great stuff.

The World Games is a very special event. It´s so few that qualify, so when you are there, you are already in the final, basically. It is also very different than other archery competitions, since you have thousands of athletes from other sports around you.

I predict the Field Archery to be a match between Guiseppe Seimandi (ITA), Bobby Larsson(SWE) and David Garcia(ESP) among the men. The World Games format without eleminations should especially fit Garcia that shoots excellent, but so far always had a struggle in eleminations and finals. Seimandi is looking good this year and is going to be hard to beat as always. I wouldn´t be surprised if both he and Garcia shot 700+ or atleast close to it. Then we have the finals specialists, as in the always performing Larsson and the muscle man Juanola that can make some mess if they reach the top four. The same goes for USA:s mr Rogers, that the europeans for sure watch after Eagletons success last year in in Val d'Isere.

It´s also going to be interesting to see if someone can disturb Eleonora Strobbe(ITA) in the womens competition. She's probably going to take the lead in the qualifiers, but she needs to bring out all she´s got to get rid of Swedens Lina Björklund when the finals start. Raigel (AUT)and Jutta Schneider(GER) will be in the front too probably. To bad we will not see Gauthe of France as she shot very good last year. On the other hand, France instead put the 2009 3D World Champion, Chantal Porte, on the starting line. I wonder what she can do when you exchange the animals to field targets, but I have no doubt that she can perform.

I am personally going to watch the womens recurve division closely too, since my girlfriend is representing Italy there.

Okay so it's not 'real' archery as we know it but.................. there's some pictures here from the first few days of archery in Cali.

Given the stature of these games and the interest there would be in many of these photogenic but slightly left-of-field sports, the lack of TV coverage and public interest/knowledge is very disappointing.

Dance Sport, Acrobatic Gymnastics, Aerobic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Artistic Roller Skating, Trampoline, Beach Handball, Canoe Polo, Fist Ball, Raquet ball, Rugby Sevens, Softball, Squash, Ju-jitsu, Karate, Sumo, Wushu, Billiard Sports, Boules, Bowling, Power-lifting, Tug-of-War, Air Sports, Canoe Marathon, Climbing, Duathlon, Finswimming, Flying Disc, Life Saving, Orienteering, Roller Inline Hockey, Roller Skating Speed, Roller Sports Road and Water Skiing.

I don't know what a lot of those sports are but I'd love a chance to find out.........

I chatted some day ago with one of the Colombian archers that came to our Southamerican Field Target shooting at ClaromecĂł. He told me that there is no interest for field in Colombia and after World Games they will concentrate only in Olympic archery.
Hope they cover some of the Field target finals.
BTW: There was a misprint on medals according to what I saw on FB, they print Word Games.

Sebastián JUANOLA: "the award is being here"

Cali - Monday, July 29, 2013

Spanish archer Sebastián JUANOLA became barebow field archery world champion last year in Val d'Isere (FRA).

JUANOLA has just arrived in Cali to take part in the field archery competition at the World Games. He approaches the competition with a sense of accomplishment and a great deal of passion for his preferred hobby: the sport of archery.

Since winning the World Championships title last year in Val d'Isere, how is your life going and where have you competed?

My life is sadder ...he laughs… Because after obtaining the world champion title, you shoot with a kind of obligation; it's not a hobby any more with some success at the end, it's now about being present, non-stop! For the rest, my life is the same, I'm a farmer and regarding archery, I participated in a competition in Sweden and I still shoot in our national league.

As a world champion, what sorts of expectations do you bring to an event like the World Games?

We have often mentioned this, my team mate David and I: our award is being here. If we're here it's because we did things well, but thinking about whether the competition will go well or not is another story. We can shoot badly and win, as we can shoot well and lose. Our award is being here amongst 10 other world-class athletes in the world.

What are the World Games like for you so far?

For the moment we haven't seen many things; we just arrived last night and we came to the training field to shoot some arrows. We'll see what happens during the next two days, but for the moment, everything seems well organised. We are neophytes, with the consequent jet-lag and with some sleep to recover.

Have you given serious thought to taking part in the recurve or compound circuit competitions that are organised by World Archery?

No at all, I want to continue shooting as I do now. I have other objectives in life: my family and my business. Archery is a hobby only and as long as I continue seeing it as such, I'll continue to shoot well. Whereas if I have to shoot as an obligation, I think that magic will be over. Here for instance, we can recognise professional archers from the others and we can feel the major pressure they have on their shoulders. This is perhaps what makes us more serene because even if we shoot worse than them, we'll get the same thing. They compete for their salaries but for me, my salary is being here and our federation funding the trip, which is a great privilege.

Do you feel that barebow archers are missing some international recognition?

Yes but certainly because we don't earn our lives with this and because we don't aspire to participate in Olympic Games. Personally I have some international recognition but I miss some recognition at national level. In Spain, barebow is not considered as it is abroad, even less within field archery. We are like the poorest in archery.

How do you see the level in Spain within the different archery disciplines?

Archery is still trendy but people were and still are standing by within all the different disciplines, probably because there's a lack of great victories. Nobody wants to shoot in recurve field archery; it's as if field archery is a downgrade for some. Again, when we see what is going on in Europe and in the rest of the world, it's a different story; there's a fight for attending big international championships, while this is not the case in Spain. It's like if what is going on in other countries was too far for Spaniard archers. David and I broke this trend a bit but people continue to perceive us differently because we are on top, not above the others; but for other archers we seem unreachable and they don't even think about joining us. I think that if they would take archery as a hobby, they would have a different attitude, because if you don't have fun when you shoot, then it's not worth it!

And how do you see yourself: do you still have fun and do you feel like accomplishing more in this sport?

After winning the World Championships, I went through a bad moment. After the victory, I participated in a 3D archery tournament but my head didn't follow: I shot as well as before but my head wasn't there. It was a total disaster because I didn't enjoy at all. It's only after this bad moment that I realised it was due to my World Champion title. Now I have fun in attending competitions again, independently of whether I finish first, second or tenth. Again: the award is being here, it's something unbelievable!
