It's all about where the arrow goes. In helping a friend recover an elk I had to make a quick shot on a bull with a 57lb longbow and 650 g ash arrow, two blade Eskimo. Ended up being a neck spine shot. Arrow didn't get enough penetration to be lethal but made him lie down quickly thereafter and we did recover him but if that had been the first shot no way would it have been effective. Elk aren't tough at all with correct shot but are super tough with less than ideal placement.
My hunting/3D set up is 48 or 51#'s shooting a 650 gr. arrow at 155 fps. I shoot heavy 2 blade BH's like Bowmania and killed an elk (comeplete pass thru) with it. Can't imagine the 3 blade VPA not working. cm shooter, my point on is 40 yards and I shoot 3D out to there regularly. No one standing next to me on the range has ever said they thought my arrows look slow. That is my self imposed yardage hunting out West too but I seem to manage getting closer.
I would limit my shoots to 20 or under from ground blind at water or wallow! The arrow I might use are 2117's which are a pretty large diameter may switch up to Gold Tip Traditional Classics for the Elk hunt, pretty much same weight but smaller diameter. We'll see how the 2117's work on deer this fall.
My set up is 160fps with a 560 grain arrow…never had a problem getting penetration on elk. I’d guess I’d be shooting the same speed as you if I was shooting the same weight arrow as you.
