I have a Samick Volcano I got from Lancaster a little over 5 weeks ago. Put a D97 string on it and have shot a few thousand arrows through it without any problems. The brace height without adding twists was 7.5", recommended brace height is 7.5-8.25". Even though it is a D97 string it still creeped a little maybe 1/8" every couple hundred arrows. I decided to try and raise the brace height a little just to see if I could get the creep to stop. After raising it to 7.75" It made an awful chirping noise when shooting it. It freaked my out since raising the brace should make it quieter. So I raised it up to 8" and it got louder. Took it back down to 7.5" and it didn't go away. I unstrung the bow and checked the string grooves and it was pretty rough so I rubbed some sealtite in the grooves and it seemed it to quiet it. I called Lancaster that night and they said it sounds like roughness in the string grooves and to use some 600-800 sandpaper in the string groove. I tried this and it quieted it a little but it doesn't seem right to me. Anyone ever experience a high pitched chirping noise near the string grooves? Just worried about a limb blowing up on me. I keep my string waxed pretty well but I guess it is possible that this is worn or has gunk on it I cannot see. I plan on trying the Dacron string that came with it tonight.
If it's been good for the last 5 weeks why would the string now give you trouble. Sorry can't help but maybe you can have someone who knows take a look at it. Good luck and hope you get it resolved.
I am in no way trashing Samick by what I am about to say... They make a great vale product, and I mean every word of that!
Now for the bad part.
I had one that started creaking after about 300 arrows. About 2 weeks of moderate shooting after that, the riser delaminated and opened up right at the throat at half draw. (Arrows were over 11gpp, so they weren't too light.). My riser was replaced immediately by 3 rivers. Those guys are great. I shot a few thousand after that without incident.
My point is, it sometimes take quite a few shots for a defect to rear its ugly head. Samick makes hundreds if not thousands of bows in a short time. The law of averages says that there will be a problem with one sooner or later, and with every one they make the chances get higher that they will have a bad one.
I encourage you to put the female side of industrial Velcro over the string grooves to see if the noise persists. If it doesn't lessen at all, time to consider a lamination problem in one of the limbs.
I agree it is a great "value" product and I do believe you get what you pay for for sure. And my concerns were around this area as well. I switched to the string that came with the bow, a Dacron endless loop and noise went away. I have a Vintage grizzly, same bow length and 2 Dacron Flemish twist strings for that. Going to try one of these today and see if noise persists. If it does I will be calling Lancaster. I have tried the velcro and noise does deaden but as both of you have hinted, I didn't need it up until now so something is up, crack in fiberglass I can't see, twisted limb I can't see, or crud on the D97 flemish string I cannot see. If the noise goes away with a different string I will just get a new string. I did take it hunting from the ground last weekend so it is possible I got some dirt on the string I suppose.
I wasn't in any way expecting this bow to last forever. I own 3 other trad bows and a compound (not counting my wife's 2 recurves I got her). I have carpal tunnel in my bow hand so my grizzly and montana beat up my wrist/hand after 30 shots or so. My samicks don't cause this problem. I am using the bow as a bridge to help me decide on a custom bow design length and grip/riser style.
Is your string well waxed? Is it possible the sound is the fibers rubbing against each other as they work toward equilibrium? It may take a while to settle down after twisting and untwisting, wax helps the process if it's worked in well.
Since it went away when you swapped the string you know it's not the bow. I'd shoot the chirpy string for a while and see if it settles down. I'd set the brace height on the high side of what's recommended and see what happens over time.
It's certainly possible and since no one else has experienced the chirping I guess that's a good thing. I tried a Dacron flemish twist today and no noise. I am going to order a new FF string. This time a different brand or from 3 Rivers, just so it's different. I have the same brand on my sage and it doesn't creep and this one does and it shouldn't, especially for the amount that it's been shot. I was more worried about a crack in the string groove. It is clear fibreglass over wood grain veneer and it looks like there could be a crack but I can't feel it, of course the wood grain makes it impossible to tell. I'm sure I could send it back to Lancaster and they would check it but since the noise is in the upper limb string groove, if it blows up less chance of injury. I only paid $129 for the bow on clearance so a limb blowing without injury doesn't concern me. However, I have been reading of some samicks coming apart at the riser. At worst I want to give the grip to the bowyer of my future custom bow since it fits well, hopefully that stays intact at the very least. Thanks everyone.
Tried a new string, beaver balls AND cat whiskers along with velcro in the string grooves. Noise came back after a few shots. I had my local bow shop guy try it same thing. A weird high pitched noise. I think I finally did find the source of the noise though. I'm pretty sure there is a crack/split in the upper string groove. Kind of a bummer as was hoping this bow to last longer than a few weeks. I got it from Lancaster so it has a full 1 year warranty. At the time of purchase they had 57 more volcano models left, now they are out of stock. Not sure what they can do at this time other than refund my purchase. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for and don't count on a replacement warranty on a discontinued model regardless of how many are in stock.
Sorry about the pic. I had to crop it to reduce the size and now it did something weird (rotated and stretched).
