I was intrigued by the ad for these, so bought some of the practice heads.
They seem small to me, but well made. They look like they would be strong. But still, doesn't look like much cutting area. What do you folks think about them? Any experiences?

I believe the 125gr head is 1 1/8" diameter which is pretty common on most heads. I shot a nice plump doe last year on a hard downward angle right in the spine. Dropped her in her tracks and once I got the head loose it was good to go after re-sharpening. I do wish the head was a tad longer and angle of the head was more laid back though.

G5's are constructed great, but designed poorly for the trad hunter, IMO.

They will all probabally do well on deer sized animals or smaller, but anything bigger and I wouldn't recommend them unless you are shooting a high speed compound.

I shot my bull last year with a G5 Shkote and was very disappointed with the penetration. I used a 69lbs. Widow shooting 720 g. Grizzly Stiks and got only about 18" of penetration. The elk only went 100 yrds. before giving up, but I thought for sure I would have got better penetration than what I did.

My previous elk was shot with the same bow but instead used a 640 g. Easton with a Ribtek and had a pass through.

There were a number of factors I believe than hindered penetration, and one of them was the design of the head. I believe if the Shkote was designed closer to a 3 to 1 ration and if those worthless extra blades were removed than they would have an outstanding head that could be more suited for larger animals such as elk.

Don't have any experience with those heads, but like Ray and Scoot... have always leaned towards the 3:1 ratio heads (or close to it) hunting with recurve in the 50-55# range. Because of the lower poundage... I prefer a slim-line, sturdy, 2-blade construction that has never failed me on deer. I suppose the Montec would blow through any whitetail if shot placement is good.

So ya like those Ribteks, huh? Surprised I don't hear more guys using them... one in-destructable broadhead, that's for sure.

Hi Dave,

Yea....I liked Ribteks but I'm still in pursuit of a favorite head. I'm going to be trying both STOS and RazorCaps this year on elk. I'll have a tag for one bull and one cow. The bull will get the STOS first and the cow will get the RazorCap...at least that is what the plan is ;) We will just have to see what happens. One of the things that will be consistant is...I will be using Gold Tips with the internal weight system weighing in at close to 600 g...always tinkiering a little here and there ;)

Ray, with the elk and the shkote head was it the new cutting tip or the older pencil-like tip?
side bar, I think you will like Razorcaps, especially if you go heavier than 125 with them. Have you tried Wensel Woodsmans or Snuffers?
