I was curious what weight maximums can be achieved on commonly WARFED risers with standard ILF limbs? I know that weight isn't everything, but I was curious about using a warfed bow for Africa and Water buffalo.

Well, some of the old hoyt talon limbs were pretty stought Ive had my hands on 65 pound short limbs. Those on a warfed bow should well break the 70 pound range. Currently availible stock from most manufacters is usually in the 48 to 50 pound range, and I think using those or the heaviest quinn limbs would get you above 60 pounds with a little tweaking. Either way, what you should realize is that at most any quality ILF limbs pound for pound are going to outperform their "custom bowyer" counterparts. For example, I have a set of 52 pound Hoyt FX's on a custom riser, comes out to roughly 60 pounds at my draw that shoots exactly the same arrow at exactly the same speed as a friends 80 some pound BIG (yes very big) Name longbow.
I believe Dsturgis has taken quite a few african game animals with a couple different bows. I cant remember what bows he used, but he might be able to give you some suggestions on what worked for him.

A lot depends on the riser selected. I have warfed a couple on 15 and 16 inch risers and the pounds REALLY stack up fast when you go short. I have a set of Martin Aurora ILF limbs that are indicated as being 49#@the standard 28#. When I put them on the 16" Morrision ILF riser they were pulling between 65 and 70 at my 29.5" draw length.
I kindof "warfed" a Martin Gazelle (an older high grade machined 15-16" youth/womens competition compound) by simply mounting Martin's Metal risered Lynx recurve limbs to it---it was a stright clean bolt on---non-ilf of course. my Lynx recurve was 65# on I believe a 25" riser, on the little Gazelle it was almost 85# too much for my to get a real acurate reading---almost too much to string. Fortunatley Larry hatfield Found me a set of lighter Lynx limbs that got the draw weight back down to #65.
So If you really wanted a heavy weight for really big game, work with the shortest risers you can.

Which of the bows that Bob usually warfs has the best riser for creating heavy bows? I am getting the bug and noticed several black bear bows for sell. Is there a riser that is more shorter and more likely to get me up in weight?

better talk directly to Bob Gordon about that. Bear archery used the "black bear" name on at least three or four different compound risers over the years.
IF, I remember correctly the ones with the metal handles are better/more desireable/more WARFable than the ones that were designed for use with a plastic grip.
