Since I don't have any deer tags left I've been gearing up to try my hand at some indoor competition this year.
The best I have been able to do is a 235/300. I shot that with my TD/3 Warf at about 53# and some 2315 XX78 shafts. I have not been able to duplicate that performance since then. I'm usually shooting about 210.

Lately I have been playing with a borrowed DAS. I also found out that PA doesn't have a 300 round. They shoot a 600 round. Same target dimentions as the 300 but it is divided into 10 rings instead of 5.

This afternoon I loaded up an Arrow Dynamics Trad Lite with a 200 gr. point and jacked up the nock point until placing the arrow tip at the base of the circle gave me a good centered hit in the scoring rings. I only had 1 arrow but I shot the first 30 shots in the round and scored a 220/300. or a 73%
My consistancy went way up and I feel as though I could have maintained this performance for the second half if I had had the time to finish it.

I guess my question is this. Are most of the people shooting barebow indoor target competition adjusting their setup to be point on (or close to it) at 20 yards? I don't know why, but I almost felt like I was cheating!

What I understand YES. Long arrows heavy points to get point on at 20 yards.
I never have shot indoors. I think if I was to do it, That is the way I would go.

Thanks Van. If I lived in FL I don't think I'be shooting indoors either!!

There don't appear to be many competitors shooting non compound bows in the PSAA. It looks like the DAS or my Warf in their current configuration would put me in the FITA barebow division. Shooting off the shelf would put me in the Traditional Recurve division.

This will either be really fun or it will drive me crazy.

NFAA sanction indoors you would be shooting traditional.:2cents:

Would not liked to been shooting outside to day. Its freezing --56 deg.

Guess you feel you have to maintain some kind of purity. I'm not good enough to shoot instinctive and so I don't have anything to maintain. Need all the help I can get just hitting paper.

I shoot Barebow Recurve in an indoor league here in the Phoenix. The weather is nice enough to shoot outside but this is an evening league and I like shooting so...Oh, and it is a Vegas 450 round, shot on 3-Spot targets.

I shoot a 70" Olympic recurve without sights, stabilizers or a clicker. Arrows are 2214 X7s with big plastic vanes. I shoot three under with a high anchor so I get the point of the arrow on the target. Not on the "X" but on the scoring rings anyway. Most everyone else in the league is shooting compounds with stabilizers, scopes and releases (there are two Olympic recurves this time but none the last time). Since I get my ass handed to me every Tuesday, just don't see it as cheeting.

Dave, trust me I need all the help I can get too!!
I don't really shoot instinctive. I mostly gap shoot.
And I'm not all that good!

It should be fun. I'm looking forward to it. It will help prep me for 3d this coming summer.

Currently ramping up for the World indoor mail match. I'll be shooting my 53# CM Hunter 1 this year with 2018s. So far, I've managed to log a 249/300 in Dec - hope next year goes well......(only shooting once/week)

I've tried various means, but ending up gap shooting each arrow. So no fixed reference point. My point on is sooooo far down on the floor that it is not even worth pursueing. I'm wondering if I get some 190 gr tips or something....

Cheers,

Greg

Pity I don't have my DAS yet or it would be a different story...

Light bow, heavy long arrows, 3 under, and a bottom of the target hold for me.

If you find yourself freezing off target or releasing as soon as you get on target, maybe with a slight loss of control, that's target panic. Shooting with a known point of aim or a sight, tends to bring it out in some of us.

Jay Kidwell has a section in the second edition of his book, Instinctive Archery Insights, that offers some drills to overcome this. It wouldn't hurt to practice those drills as a preventative measure, instead of a cure.
