I thought I would pass on my feelings about harvesting my first deer with a trad. bow. First, the set up. After sitting on a small childs chair in a likley deer area for the evening, it was time to leave the woods, darkness was setting in and the forest was loosing definition. While I could clearly here game walking around me, no deer had entered my shooting zone. as I eased out of the woods, a small deer popped his head up right in front of me. He faced me straight on at 15yrds. I passed on the shot, and continued walking towards him. As he bolted, I caught movement, to my right. About 25 yrds. into an open field stood a nice deer, broad side, just looking my way. I new his head was up, and he would likley jump the arrow, BUTT, their he was. I made my decision, took a deep solid anchor, picked a spot at 2/3 down on his heart and released, in perfect form, (for me). The Univers went into slow motion, as the arrow flew, the deer jumped, got his whitetail afterburners on and flew forward. What seamed like eternity passed before I heard a heavy cracking sound. He made a big jump to leap a fence and landed ina heap, scrambled up and crashed down again. Then he was gone, into the woods, carshing into the distance. I waited 2 hours and started looking, tracking slowly, searching for blood. At first nothing, then, over the fence, a mass of red. No need to mark the trail, it was 6" wide, never ending. He made it 30yrds.
It wasn't perfect about the way the shot went down. I felt bad about taking a high risk shot, Knowing deer hunting as I do, I knew he could jump, and he did. All my practise put the arrow on the spot.Tunning my bow created a deep penitrating hit even through heave bone. There was a bit of luck, a bit of oppertunity, and yes, some skill. I give thanks for my harvest, and this country, all our blessings....
