first time this season that i have gotten onto a gobbling bird. he's strutting his way across the field to me, only 20 more yards till in gun range. but wait, there is thunder in the air! a dozen cows w/calves come charging up the valley, only to stop & graze EXACTLY in the spot that the longbeard had hastily vacated moments before....never another peep from him, gone again. guess i'll just stop & pick up a few filets & a big ribeye on the way home, LOL! :sbrug: ps2

I told you not to use so much corn when baiting turkeys. :mistake:

Tuffy, pretty soon he should probably switch from corn... to introducing a huge amount of beatles, spiders, garter snakes, and worms to his favorite hunting field. They just love pecking the grass fields for insects and such.
Finding any morrels out there, ps2? It turned real cold here as of late, next wet and warm trend we get should have them popping up around here.

First it was too dry, Then it started raining Thursday and Friday and now it is snowing after getting 2 inches of rain. If the shrooms come up now they will freeze when half grown :)
I have seen and heard turkeys everyday but they are so henned up they will not respond to a call. Friday Morning I sat and watched 3 Toms and about 15 hens work the field for 2 1/2 hours before the storm ran them out of the field into the woods..and sent me home empty handed.. :)

My buddy took a good tom last Saturday. He got out there well after sun-up (not intentional), setup some decoys and started calling. A group of birds were out in a field and 2 toms came down to the decoys. I think he was successful that morning without really knowing why (rather new to turkey hunting). I believe the toms had worked this group of hens for nearly an hour without any luck, then heard and saw the other group (decoys) and decided to go take a look. :)
I decided to take a gamble when choosing which season to hunt. I'm in the last season (week) of hunting... hoping that most hens will be starting to go to nest and a big boy or two still might be on the prowl for hens still wanting to take. Sure would be nice to pop one, but heck I'm just looking forward to taking some time off WORK!!!
Another turkey tip from your neighborhood "turkey talker" -
Soon after fly-down time... make 2 or 3 long series of outright loud and rambuncious CUTTING and loud yelping one right after the other, no holds barred!... go for broke at the get go!! Make it sound like there's LOTS of hens there. Then shut-up and make no calls for at least a half hour. You may just see a War Dance at Dawn. ;)

Piney,
Your calling description is exactly what has been happening every morning when they fly down. The hens start cutting and yelping loudly for a few min then all goes quiet and then they head out to feed with the Toms in tow.

the hen flocks here have already broken up, w/many of them already nesting. where 2 weeks ago i was seeing 20 hen flocks w/2 or more gobblers, now i see at most 2 or 3 hens spread out over the farm, w/little or no gobbling going on. we had such an early spring here that most of the action is over. then, this AM i get up, look out, & there is 2 inches of snow on the ground! turn on the news, it is warmer in massachusetts than here in tennessee. go figure... :sbrug: ps2

still yet another grudge against cows. had 2 hens waltzing around in good gun range the other day, same field as before...here they come again!!! !@#$ ! 5 cows & their calves came running up from the lower pasture & chased my live "decoys" slap clean thru the fence onto the neighbors property. next season i'm gonna carry a BB pistol & put them @#$% cows on the run! when they see me, they're gonna head for the barn! @#$% ! ps2
