Yesterday I found myself Giddy with anticipation of the season that is fast approaching. Not that I want to lure any more folks to Montana, but wow, the hunting opportunity here is unreal!
Right now I have 5 deer tags in my pocket and I could drive down to Fish, Wildlife and Parks and buy 5 more today if I wanted. I have one either sex elk tag that is good for about 10 weeks of hunting, 5 of archery and 5 of rifle. If I had wanted, I could have put in for an Xtra antlerless elk tag, but I have a full plate already. I will also have at least one antelope tag.
Then to top it off, I am going whitetail hunting in Idaho (down in warfs country) come November. It will be a rifle hunt with some old buddies and my dad.
My season is looking something like this:
Sept 1, Hike 3-5 miles into some high country and get ready for the next morn. I'll be "concentrating" on arrowing a muley buck, but bugles will easily lure me different directions. I'll also have a muley doe tag, cause at this point in my archery career, I just want to arrow some game and gain some confidence! This will just be a weekend hunt.
The next weekend, will be about the same...
The next weekend I'll hit an elk honey hole (unless my elk tag is filled, which judging from past seasons should not be the case!) and give them heck for a couple days.
THEN...September 22 me and 3 buddies head east to Oz's Place. I'll likely have an elk tag and possibly 3 deer tags to work on until we leave Oct. 1. Wow.
After that, more of the same. Trying to fill my elk tag, trying to kill whitetail does, muley does, any buck. Then Mid October I'll chase lopes with my 7 year old daughter in tow (rifle).
Finally, November hits and I have whatever tags are left to rifle hunt, plus the Idaho whitetail hunt.
Well, to finish, we have an antlerless whitetail season that runs to January 15th, with up to 5 does allowed.
Sounds like a lot of opportunity, and it is, but the past 7 seasons have proven Fruitless!! Lots and LOTS of fun, but no arrows put in the boilers yet! This has got to be the year...right!
How much huntin you going to do this year?
