Just spent the weekend working at the NRA convention. Staffed the American Single Shot rifle ASSN booth (single shot rifles are my other major vice) to mention BOWS the Wensel Bros were there with their vidos and books and LImbsaver had a booth, I talked bows especially my DAS with them and bought a new mini Coil S for my DAs and a good "show only" price. I was wearing my hat wiht the PapaBull Mtn Muffler hatband and I had a whole bunch of guys recognize it for what it was---the NRA is a gun org, but there were a bunch of tradbow guys there.

Anyway one of the guys who also helped staff our ASSRA booth has a website for his business (deer scent lures and CW reenactors artillary supplies) He has a Website (buckstix.com) that has a fascinating and enlightening thread entitled Deer hunting with a Mountain Howitzer that some of you might find interesting. Its a blast--in more ways than one and reall presents an interesting perspective on Civil war casualiy figures.

DWS, have you ever seen and or shot the Sharps? 50-140? I always thought it would be neat to have a bandolier of those, a shooting stick and that big cannon and have a go at praire dogs.

NO! I'm sorta scared of'em when thay get that big. shoulder fired artillery is too much for me.
What I heard was that 3 or 4 guys were shooting them at the schuetzen range in the big park in downtown San Francisco practising for an upcoming match ( Can you believe they actually had shooting ranges in SF and most other cities before they all became enlightened) Anyway by mistake all the shooters touched those guns off at the same time and started the San Francisco Earthquake:D maybe that led to the anti gun climate in CA.

Seriously I do more of the eastern schuetzen schooting rather than the quigly/buffalo/Blackpowder cartridge long range stuff---however I am building a long range creedmoor type target rifle but it'll be .40-70 SS. (Now Master WARF knows a thing our two about those big boy cartridges.) They actually DID have all sorts of urban shooting ranges in those pre gun control days. Many of the old city amusement parks had their beginnings as schuetzen club ranges

Now to tie this back to archery. I'm leaving this afternoon for a very long weekend single shot shooting match at our ASSRA range south of Etna green and west of Warsaw IN and camping at the range. There are several other guys who are archers. Seems like trad bows and oldtimey rifles have a lot in common. When the shooting is done we are going to break out the bows and use the 200 yard range and berm just for fun. Kind of like one end of an English range

well, i read the whole article about whitetail howitzering(???), & i'm here to tell you that it sounds a whole lot more illegal than anything i've ever tried whilst hunting. that said, it HAS opened up my eyes to another world out there. now if i can figure out how to get a claymore to go off simultaneously with the trail camera i'm setting up, i'll really put a crimp in the hunters trespassing on the farms i hunt. i figure a picture or two of that will put a stop to that nonsense!:highfive: a big fifty WOULD make a neat groundhog rifle, huh? ps2
