It's also the time when midwesterners usually can expect to start finding the luscious Morels among the mayapple shoots. While morchella is not, necessarily, the tastiest or or some the most abundant mushrooms of the year, they are undoubtedly the most sought-after. They're hard to mistake for anything else and they are definitely some of the most delectable edibles of the year. These are the first important mushroom of the season and it's always great to find the first wrinkled heads hiding among equally wrinkled and similarly colored leaves from the previous fall.

I expect this should be a very good year with lots of moisture and a good freeze-over with plenty of snow cover during the winter. Anyone find any yet?

It's too early here in N. Illinois, Robert. They start popping around the last week of April and finish up the first week of May. Especially after a good, soaking rain and then warm humid days that follow. A delectible treat for the frying pan for sure. Sometimes we find 'em by the pound and sometimes just a small sack full. Guess it depends on how often and hard we search. :)

Thought you were talking about opening day of turkey season in KY! Unfortunately the fact that I'm typing this message means I am neither hunting morels nor turkeys, both of which I love! C'est la vie.
