and she's in great shape! An eBay transaction.
An older one piece wood & glass 70" bow marked at 33#. This puppy has got some mass. Love the grip/riser shape.
This is going to be my 'form' bow for extended practice sessions. I'll be fitting it with a draw check.
Got ta get a string built quick like so I can shoot this thing! The limb tips are reinforced on the back but not on the front of the tips so I'm guessing a Dacron string is the way to go.
All the local off-the-shelf strings available are 16 strand jobs but there is a wheelie bow tech that can build me a string. I'm his only stickbow customer!
10 strand or 12 do ya think? And perhaps 66" in length?
I'm guessing the brace height for this bow should be around 7.5-8", eh?
As far as aquiring a couple of the old style stabilisers for this bow, is eBay going to be my best bet?
Now I can't wait to receive the used 38# GM I bought and is enroute.
Thanks, gentlemen.

Holmes,
Congrats on a fine old target bow. Everyone says Earl Hoyt understood the recurve and never built a bad one. I can't answer all your questions but I'll offer my experience on a couple.
None of the current production Hoyt limbs I have are reinforced on the back, just on the front. Earl was generally ahead of the curve on about everything so I would be willing to bet that thing is FF compatible. You might check with some more folks first but I would shoot a modern string on it.
My 70" bow measures 65" from nock to nock when strung but that is with a 9" brace hight. Hoyt recommends 8.75"-9.5" with long limbs on a 25" riser, i.e. a 70" bow. Your brace hight sounds low to me.
Can't help you with stabilizers or sights as I am a Barebow shooter. Good luck none the less. I think you will come to love that fine old target recurve.

Welcome to the fold. Take a look at my pics in the gallery, got some old Hoyts there. What PM number is it? The 5PMs, were about the pinicale of PM development, but the 6PMs (used cheaper, dyed wood) shoot remarkably well too.
If it a 70", 8.5" is about as low on the brace height as you can get, and some folks have gone as high as 12"!!!
10 or 12 strand B-50 Dacron (ONLY) will work fine.
If your draw length is under 28" you "might" get away with 1716s, 28" and over, 1816s are the usual fodder.
As for stabs, they are a little hard to come by, but you can make your own. Get some 1/4" x 20 treaded rod, that will fit the upper/lower bushings, and the other end will work with most current or older end-weights. A machinist can make them for you too, again 1/4" stainless steel rod, with 1/4" x 20 threads cut on both ends. Std length was about 9". The wooden PM really took to that twin stab configuration.
The GM is a "faster" bow, and more tuneable, but think once you start with the wooden PMs, there's no comparison! It just feels good!

DA, you're right on the brace height. My guess was indeed low. As it happened, I also received my GM today a few hours after the PM. Kinda like Christmas for this child!
The GM is also a 70" and it came with a new string. Strung that puppy and it measured 8-7/8". I'll tune from there.
I would think I could have my PM string made to the same length as the GM string as they're both 70" models.
Viper, thanks for the tips on building the stabilisers. Just happen to know a machinist....
The bow is a 4PM in excellent condition. No stress indications or limb twist. Even the finish is near perfect. Paid $102 for it.
I draw a bit over 30" so I'll be sticking with the 1816s.
Nice gallery, my friend. An impressive collection of arrow slingers, to be sure.
Thanks for the info, guys.

Great shooting bow, Holmes! Ya stole it at that price.
I'd think a 66" string would get you at 9.0-9.5" brace with moderate twisting. I believe I braced the 66" PM that I had at 9.0" with a 62" DACRON string.
The PM's are beautiful, stable shooting target bows, have some fun!
Yeah VIPER... I'm still drooling over your PM collection in the Photo Gallery.

As I said, in trhe other thread, you;re now good to go on both counts.
And Yeah, $102 was a steal! :highfive:
I'd be intersted in your comparison of the two bows after you've shot them both for a while.

You're gonna hate me, but that's not all of them! :sorry:
