Score.
I just short the absolute worst 3D score I have ever shot shooting my recurve this past weekend.
The shortest distance was about a 19yrd. squirrel. The longest was a 30yrd. antelope.
Average target distance was 25yrds.
60 targets over 2 days.
Scoring 11,10,8,5,0
Shot instinctive gap and used a 69lbs. Widow with 31" 2419 arrows and 160g. points. Shot split finger while anchoring with my index finger in the corner of my mouth.
One of my rounds I shot my average of 80% than I got such a bad case of target panic I ended up missing 6 targets from jerking so bad and could never overcome it like I normally can.
I definitely have my homework cut out for me. Just when you think you are almost unstopable ;) Humility is bliss.
For 60 targets I shot a 367 out of a possible 660.

Dang Hank,
90%...I can only shoot that good on my good days ;)
I'm guessing there were 40 targets. Is that correct?
Sweet shootin' my friend!

The middle part of our State Police Olympics is a 28 target 3D shoot. First half was supposed to be unmarked and the second half was supposed to be marked. To speed things up they decided to have us shoot two arrows at each target. The first represented the "unmarked" and second, since we had the previous shot to go on, was more like a "marked" target. All this was scored "X", 10, 8 & 5. Possible was 280 w/28X.
I shot 224-4X which represents about 69%. This doesn't mean much as I don't think anyone else does this kind of format. Since I don't shoot 3D and was surprised I did as well as I did, thought I would post it, just as something different.

I just finished shooting on my Indoor 3-D league. I posted some pics of the range a few weeks ago. Scoring was 10-8-5, distances were 7-40 yds. Hardest was the last week, whitetail at 38 yds and a racoon at app. 32.
I ended up finishing the league with a 248 average out of 320. Worst score was the first week with a 228, best was a 259 on the second to last week.
The last week was our party week and just for fun. I may have had a bit too much "aiming fluid" for accurate shooting so it's just as well we didn't shoot for score.
The interesting thing was that I finished in the top 40% out of 256 shooters and I was the only barebow shooter.
I can't wait for some 3-D shoots to start in my area. I chomping at the bit to do some outdoor competition. My shooting has really improved since last summer and I think I'm going to do much better.

DA,
Isn't a 224 out of a possible 280 actually 80% instead of 69%?
That is some really good shootin'! 80 or 85% is usually what wins trad classes.

I gotta feeling you are going to leave a pretty good impression on most people's minds with that kind of shooting skill.

Our local 3-D shoots are set about like most everybody does around here with targets out to 35 yds for the trads, many steep uphill, downhill type shots in the heavy woods. I have kept a record of my scores over the last three years as some courses are easier and some harder. We score 10, 8, 5, no scoreing of the 11 ring anywhere around here. All our shoots are 40 targets per day with most of the shoots being two day affairs with good camping, etc. Over the last three years I have kept my average of 9.2 per target with scores usually in the 365 to close to 380 range depending on the course. I usually shoot a warfer of course, 48 lbs 65" long with Sky carbon limbs. Arrows are 460 Easton redlines, 100 gn points 4" straight fletch, this combo gives me 221 fps with my 32" draw, makes a flat shooting machine for sure. I usually do about 30 3-D shoots a year....warf

Bob,
You're a machine!
90%...that is my goal as far as an average.
The best I've done...ever...on a course like you described is 95%.
I average between 80 and 85%
The worst I have done was just a couple of weeks ago and it was 55%...I had a bad case of TP I just couldn't break.

Black Wolf...Yea, the old TP can kill a score pretty fast. Years ago I shot so much indoor 20 yd Vegas rounds preparing for the big Vegas indoor shoot each year that now I still have a little TP at 20 yds! I have to tell myself when come up on a 20 yd 3-D target that it's 19 or 21 yds or the old mind goes nuts trying to let go of the string. Funny the head games we must sometimes play with ourselves to stay ahead in the archery game! TP is tough to cure but there are ways of getting around it, just have to find the path and go for it....warf

Hank,
According to my destop calculator that's 83% of the possible. That's phenomanal barebow shooting from what I've seen. You are to be congratualted!

Shot 30 targets this weekend in the mud. I'm guessing 10 to 30 yards with an average of 15-18. 5 kids around me kept me focused on safety and shooting at the same time. I shot my warf - 55 or so lbs, with Bemans ICS 400 carbons and 100 grain points.
Split finger. w/ a newly adjusted tiller and newly cut (2 inches off) arrows, so the bow was not the same, exactly, as the last time I shot.
[Let's see, what other excuses can I dream up?!]
I shot 170, scoring 10, 8, 5 and 0, and that included 3 total misses! Nothing to be especially proud of, but there it is.

Mike, 170 out of 300 is over 50% of the possible. I don't know about the rest of the country but around here that is good shooting for "trad" and would win or place well in that class.
If you still don like it (LOL) keep in mind that it will only get better and better. Keep shooting and learning...

Thanks Dave. I've only been to 3 3D shoots in my life. All in the last 2 months. I sold my compound last spring and picked up a used longbow. Somewhere along the way I got warfed.
Now I'm into the 3D shooting - meanin I love it! So far the shoots I've been to weren't keeping score, as far as I know. But I kept score using the system mentioned above, just to measure my own progress.
Since I have no idea what to expect, and no measuring stick except the expert shooters round here, it's good to get some feedback. If you say it ain't terrible I'll take your word for it, but I can tell it ain't great. I know that I am capable of improvement and will continue to aspire to a higher standard.
I have very little time to shoot these days, but Rome was not built in a day! I'll keep at it.

I finally got to shoot outdoors the first time this season. Weather wasn't too bad, a bit chilly and it did snow for a few minutes :) Other than that pretty good. Shot on a 56 target course, 10-8-5 scoring, shots from 7-40+ yards.
I ended up using my recently converted Gamemaster "Deluxe". Gamemaster riser with modified Martin Aurora limbs. I spray painted the limbs black for turkey hunting out of a blind so most people just thought it was a stock bow.
I shot a 451/560 for the day. I think that put me in the top two or three. I believe the club had around 90 shooters over the weekend. I wasn't too concerned about scoring, just having a good time shooting outside. But I was pretty satisfied with how I shot. Always room for improvement, though. :shooting:

I've never seen a score above that when they include 12's. I would have expected a max high score with 30 targets that include 12's to be more around 290. That is awesome! I would love to see you shoot some day.
Please fill us in more with details about your shooting style and what the tournament was set up like.

Shot my longbow in a 30 target club shoot this morning. Shot one of my lowest scores in recent months, 170, using IBO scoring. I normally shoot about 69-72%, which puts me right about the middle at most IBO events.

Shot my first 3D in a month and I'm still stuggling with TP on occasion...even though it's not as bad as it has been.
I shot a 233 on a 29 target course scoring 12, 10, 8, 5, 0.
I shot targets ranging from 15 yrds. to 50 yrds. for score and tried a couple of 70yrd. ones from the compound stakes with the wheelie boys. It was a fun shoot so I could do that if I wanted to ;)
I was getting my elevation pretty good but would pluck or flinch them left and right.
I only made 2 real good shots that felt great concerning TP and shooting form. The rest frustrated me a little here and there.

shot an IBO qualifier today, first 3-D of the year. shot in the TH or whatever they call it now. 25yds maximum with most targets between 25-17yrds. 30 targets, 11-10-8-5. got a little tired toward the end and it showed in my shooting. shot a 251, coulda done a little better, but I'm pleased with that.

Hank,
Way to go bud...better bow control and a good gap system??? It looks like you already have it pretty much mastered based on your percentages you get with your scores...or...are you not going to be happy until you shoot a perfect score? ;)
Are you wanting to develop a better gap system for longer targets?
I don't start consciously think about gaps until the targets are about 60yrds. or more. I than begin to shoot more consciously and even point of aim or split vision when the targets are close between 80 and 100 yrds. or more.
My point on is at about 100 yrds. with my 60 lbs. DAS shooting 580 g. arrows.
Have you found out what your point on is?
Ray ;)
BLACK WOLF
05-30-2005, 07:30 AM
larry,
Good shootin'! I also would be pleased with shooting close to an 85%.
I base the percentages on the 10 score. The 12's and 11's are just bonuses to me which only add a few points for a typical 3D shoot, because I only get a few anyways, which is no where near to what some of those compound shooters get ;)
If I shoot anywhere between 85% and 90% in reguards to the 10 score I'm really happy ;)
Now, if I shot above 100% like Hank did, well you just might as well pinch me or hold me down, because I would be either dreamin' or so ecstatic you would think I was having a seizure ;)

...I will be placing the tip of the arrow exactly where I think it should go.
I don't mean to be a pain about this Hank, but what you describe above is not "gap shooting". What you describe is "point of aim". I know because that is the way I aim/shoot.
Point of aim is done at the target. Gap is done at the riser and fits in more with Howard Hill's split vision system or a kind of sight picture approach.
Just want to clairify our terminology so others know what we are talking about.

DA,
Your not being a pain, but I think you are mis-interpreting Hank's style of shooting.
I believe he is talking about finding out what his point on distance is with that quote.
Based on his previous descriptions of his style, it would seem he is gap shooting to a degree and not using point of aim as his main method.

I had a surprize release on 1 target that I was lucky to hit at all.Not sure what happend, musta just not been payin attention as I was almost drawn when I felt it slippin from my fingers about punched myself in the face.I normally do have a pretty good grip on the string just not that time.

Shot my 4th course ever. 30 critters - scored 10 for a hit outside the kill and 20 for any kill. I scored 390. Dropped 2 or maybe even 3 and hit too many 10's. Pretty weak but better than my last, even weaker score. The good thing about it is that I have room for dramatic improvement, while some of you will have to really work to improve a couple of points!!:)

I just shot at the Howard Hill South Eastern Classic in Alabama. I've been shooting a recurve 15 months and my Dalaa a month. There were over 500 trad shooters, not sure how many in recurve class. The rules are no sights,no elevated rests,no stabilizers.one finger must touch the nock.
The classes were divided into mens and womens. Recurve any arrow material.Longbow any arrow material and selfbow wood arrows only.
The targets were an average of 20 yds. a few 30 yds. one 40 yds. a lot of shots through trees. One under a log 3 feet off the ground target 6 feet further back. 25 targets scored 12-10-8-and 5 outside rings 0 miss.
The tournment was a multi round one or two day turn best score each day.A seperate tournment for thoes shooting only one day.
My best scores were 239 first day. 231 second day. 470 combined tied for third. I lost the shoot off by an inch and cried a little on the trip home.:waaah:

Sunday I went to my first 3-D shoot. I got to tell you, it was a humbling experiance!!! My final score was a whopping 126! I thought I would do better, much better.
I am spot on at 20 yards, but that is on even flat terrain. Those uphill and down hill shots are killers!! I got a total of seven (yes seven) zeros, lost 3 arrows, and broke one!!!
Now bear in mind that I am shooting the Traditional stakes, nothing past 25 yards. I dont use sights, and dont really gap. I just sorta point and shoot when it feels right. I was using a PSE Imala 40#, with wood arrows and a Flipper rest.
In the end I had a great, although sobering time. I cant wait till my next one!! Hopefully I will do a bit better. I want to beat that 200 mark!!

I would say that if you are averaging all 8's that is pretty good. If you want to win most of the big shoots, you need to be averaging all 9's.
