At some point today I will unveil the riser that will be known for now on as The Aloha Riser. She will be painted in a floral print reminiscant of the Hawiian shirts worn in the 50's.

I will not be doing a paint along, but will post pics of her progress.

I want to thank Sam up front for this riser. It is gonna be a fun project! Yall stay tuned for some fun!!!

LOL!!!!!! Got the riser in hand. Gotta do a bit of work to her first. Got some voids that need filling and I want to see about leveling the pocket floors. Might not have to level them, but might as well. I'll post a pic of the raw riser when I get home tonight.

Looking at the riser, I might not be able to do a floral pattern, if not I will do a "Sunset Fade"....We will have to wait and see.

You know those risers are to heavy for me now, but they have a great grip!
Love that kind of grip

Kingfisher riser. They are really good risers! I was surprised at the quality of the casting. A Rambo copy, and a good one!

Well, its been raining the past 2 days so I decided to do a lil hand work on the riser. I drilled some holes in her in key places where I am going to fill with a product called Quick Steel. When cured you can sand, and paint like it was a piece of the original. I also did some hand sanding to get the bulk of the factory paint job off. Well, untill I was out of sandpaper, LOL!! Next I will hit it with a chemical stripper to remove the rest of the paint and clean it up a lil more. After that, fill in the voids and let her cure.

I am also thinking about building up/radiusing the shelf to facilitate shooting from it with a plunger.

Got her stripped and the upper cutouts filled. Next will be to fill in the handle void and the void around the sight mount. I'm going to leave the sight holes open on this one.

Bit of an update....

I finished filling in all the voids and sanded her smooth, or so I thought. Seems like some bubbles appeared in the Quick Steel. I filled these with JB Weld and am currently waiting for it to cure. Once this is done then I will re-sand and get her ready for primer.

Gonna have to wait till tomorrow. I learnt a hard lesson today, NEVER try to file JB Weld untill it is FULLY cured. It aint purty!! Had to redo the area I just got done doing.

Finally got her voids filled in, sanded, and primed!!! I did notice a few "wrinkles" as I was priming. Gonna have to sand those out tomorrow and re-prime her. Here are the before and after primer pics:

Looking Good! Seems you have to go easy on the sanding or the "edges" where the filler and metal come together show up.
I like that Kingfisher riser, my son in law has one...hmmmm...might warf it for him if he'll let me.

Looks good Del.

I've thought about filling voids like that, but never had the guts to try.

For the wrinkles, can I suggest spot putty filler? (I think that's what it was called) It's a thinner type of bondo that spread easier. I think if memory serves it was for those little blems that showed up after primer and before paint.

Can't wait to see this one finished.

When he gets that one done, I'm gonna send him another one to do! LOL Del will have a lot of risers to paint, plus he will have too many to shoot! He is free to trade or sell any I send him.

Warped Arrow
02-18-2011, 03:41 PM
Mike, you dont have to be too easy, just not heavy handed...

Benzy, these are spots that for some reason I didnt sand smooth in the filler. If you fill in the voids, make sure they are clean and free of dust, paint, ect. Make sure you score them well for good adhesion.

Sam, Cant wait to see what you have cooked up for me next!! I think I may keep this one for a while, since I dont own a DAS system bow.

Thank you all for your encouragment. I love to paint these risers, heck, I even enjoy the sanding, LOL!!! Feels good to do something with your hands and have it come out good.

HOWEVER......She is gonna be worked on a bit this week end if at all possable, atleast one coat.

I'm cutting a Bear Grizzly riser in DAS for ya! Going to the PO in the next few days with 7 or 8 risers to mail. Will send it with them for your next project, lol will keep you busy.

I think that I'll do that one in a nice camo. If I ever get the Aloha riser done that is. Between work, looking for a new job, honey do's and everything else, there just are not enough hours in the day!! And to top it off, we have a cold front that has moved in so it is now to cold to paint or strip.

Warped Arrow

She still isnt finished.....got to get more white primer, then I'll add the color. Just started working third shift, 40+ hours a week, so I will be able to buy paint befroe too long and finish her up. I havent forgotten about the riser or this thread.

Once she is done, I'll start the next 2. One is gonna be a simple strip and refinish (wood) , the other will be a paint job deal.
