View Full Version : How I paint a riser.

This will be a rather long DIY, but it is soooooo worth it. In this I will explain how I paint a metal recurve riser. This would also apply to a compound riser as well.

Before we procede, a word of cation:

If you are sanding, filing, using a wire brush, or doing anything that could cause metal filings, wear a mask. Also be aware that some metals are flamable!!! Magnisium (sp) is one of these. If you are using chemicals, do so in a very well ventelated area. Wear protective gear at all times. Your health and safty is paramount!!

That being said, lets get to it!!!

First you must remove parts not wanting to be painted from the bow. With a recurve it is easy, just remove the limbs, rest, button, sight, and limb bolts. Set all of these aside.

Next you want to strip any paint from your riser. I use a combination of chemical strippers, wire brushes, sand paper, and steel wool. You want it to be nice and shiney when your done. Once the paint is removed, wipe the riser off with a cloth. This will remove any "filings" from sanding and such.

Next, if there are any imperfections you need to correct, do this using either "engin putty" or Quick Steel. I like Quick Steel because it has a fast set-up and cure time and is readily available.

After it (putty) cures, then sand to your liking. You want nice smooth junctions. This will help to ensure a nice smooth paint job.

Here are some pictures of a riser that I am currently working on so you can get an idea what it should look like after the above steps:

Here ya go:

Looking forward to seeing what kind of primer you used. I used self etching Rustoleum on the one I camoed but I think there might be some better choices.

When I spray Duracoat I don't use primer, I have just to try it, but found out that primers don't stick as well as just the Duracoat but you do have to prep the riser more

Warped Arrow

Well, its raining so I wont be doing any actual priming today, But I will let you know what I use and the steps I take. First a precautionary statement: Always prime/paint in a well ventilated area!!! The fumes can cause you to get dizzy, pass out, or worse. Never use any aerosol in a closed in area or near flames. Trust me on this!!

I use a two part primer system. Yes, it is extra steps, yes it cost a bit more, but I find that it is more than worth it.

The 2 primers I use are Rust-Oleum Self Etching Primer in Gray and Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Primer in White. The reason for the 2 primers will be evident shortly.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Primer.jpg

The key with any primer is prep work. Wearing latex gloves, I first wipe the riser down with a damp rag to make sure there is no oil or grease anywhere. I then dry the riser with a lint free cloth to make sure that it is totally dry.

Next, I use bolts to fill any holes that I don't want paint in. Some use cotton, some leave them open, I like bolts. I find that this allows for a crisp and defined area where the paint stops.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Bolts.jpg

Once you have all your bolts in, you must find a way to hang your riser, totally suspended. What I do is take a section of rope and tie it to the top limb bolt. I have an extra long bolt that I use just for this. I then suspend the riser from a pole in my back yard. It used to be a clothesline pole, but it is now a painting pole, LOL!

The first primer I use is the self etching. Make sure you use even strokes that slightly overlap. Keep in mind that this is you base coat and ANY imperfections in this will show in your final coats. Make sure you get in all the nooks and crannies, you want no bare metal left. Once you have a nice even coat, back up and spray a "fog" or "mist" of primer around the riser. This will envelope the riser and will float into the spaces that you may have missed. Allow to dry for a couple of minutes, then re-coat. After the second coat, remove all the bolts except for the limb bolts. Do this so that there is no chance of the primer cracking when it is dry. I like to loosen the limb bolts a few turns to release the primers grip on them. You want to leave the limb bolts so you have something to hold onto without touching the fresh paint on the riser. Next, CAREFULLY move the riser to its drying area. I use our spare bathroom shower for this, since it has no connections.

Once the initial primer is cured (3-4 hours...I leave it for a few days to a week) then we move on to the second primer. Repeat the steps as above. You will notice that it is easy to see where you may have missed due to the color contrast between the white and the gray. Another plus with the white primer is that any color you paint the riser, you will get the true color. Dark primer may bleed through and alter the final color.

The next step will be the first coat of paint. This riser will have a multi color paint job, so there will be a total of 6 coats(one per color) of paint. The steps are all the same as you would do for a single color. We will get further into this once I can get my riser primed.

There was no rain this morning so I was able to prime the riser!!!!

I didn't wait as long as I typically do between colors, since I was worried about the chance of rain. I wanted to get this step finished and curing in the house so I can start looking for paint!!

Anyway, here are pic's of the gray primer coat and the white primer coat. Next up...We get into color with a green streak of envy!!!

Awesome so far..

One question...suppose you noticed a minor/slight imperfection of the metal preparation (light sanding mark/scratch) ..can this be repaired (sanded or filled) after the gray coat of primer is applied or does it need to be re-stripped,repaired, and re-primered in gray prior to proceeding to the white primer? Seems I always find one spot that is not quite "up to snuff"..

Thanks..am waiting for the rest..as your weather permits!

Warped Arrow

rwsbow, What I would do in your case is sand the area and fix the repair, then reprime. I wouldnt strip it. I found a slight imperfection in this one, but I think it will be covered by the handle.

Off to find some Green paint!!!The weather is PERFECT for painting today!!!!

Good news, I am FINALLY home!!!

Great news, I got the paint!!!

Bad news, Its dark and I wont do color coats in the dark. It is these coats that if you mess up on, your looking at sanding and possably stripping and starting allllll over.

We WILL get color on the riser tomorrow. In the mean time, here is what we will be putting on:

Well today is the day!! Were going GREEN!!!! Not Eco Friendly Green, but Fluro Green!!!

Normally this is where I would do a solid single coat, but with this being a multi color riser, we cant do that. For a single color the steps are the same though.

First thing you want to do is don some gloves. I always handle my risers that I am painting with gloves. It keeps oils off of the primer/paint. Those oils can cause the paint not to adhere properly. If you dont have proper adhesion, you can get bubbles and paint lifting. That would not be good!!

OK, got your gloves on? Good! Got your paint ready? Good. I am going to give it a full coat, just like a single color paint job. There are 2 reasons I am doing this. First so that you can get a feel for a single color job. Second, I saw a blemish in my primer coat and I want to make sure it is covered.

Now I take the riser and instead of hanging it, I hold it by the grip. We are going to paint the ends first. The reason I do this is because that is where most of the lil nooks and crannies are. I want to make sure I get them painted good. I do this on any riser that I am painting that has little pockets where I may miss or not quite get to if it was hanging.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Green1.jpg

Now that the ends are done. Hang the riser and starting from the top(this is important to me) begin your base coat. You just want to color the riser. You will see plenty of primer peeking through, thats ok. Once you have colored the riser from top to bottom, let it dry about 3 minutes then recoat it. Be carefull that you are not to close, this will cause runs. Applying too much paint in one area will do the same. nice even strokes, overlapping. Keep it smooth like fine whiskey or good jazz!!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Green2.jpg

Once you have all the primer painted over and you are happy with your base coat, move the riser to your drying area as you did before. Allow the riser to cure for 24 hours. Most spray paints say 6-8 hours, but I like to play it safe.

After the 24 hour cure period, hang the riser once again and give it another coat. After this final base coat, spray a "fog" or "mist" around the riser like you did with the primer. Once again, hang in your drying area and allow to cure.

If this was to be a single colored riser then that would be the end of paint and we would move on to Clear coat and finishes.

This isnt a single color job though!! We still have Purple, Black, and Chrome to do!! The next step for me is finding a flame pattern that I can replicate on the riser. A pattern, some electrical tape, and some time is all that stands between us and the next step!!

Untill next time.......

Del

(If you have any questions on anything so far, let me know. DO NOT ask about the next step though, LOL!!!!)

Pete, I have decided that with the riser that Sam is sending me to go with the Zebra pattern in Fluro Orange and Fluro Green. I will talk to my string makers about getting a string twisted up for the twisted paint job I will be doing. I even found a cloth sample so I can get a shooters shirt made!!!

Today during Lunch I was able to get the Black on the riser!!!!

First had to mask off the area that I wanted to remain Gree, the holes. This was simple, but hard to accomplish. Take a piece of Electrical tape and cover the inside of the holes. LOL!!! Sure, simple, NOT!! Darn tape kept sticking to my fat fingers and itself. Finally I got it done.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Masking1.jpg

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Masking2.jpg

Next I went and hung the riser on the paint post again. This time though I just painted the front of the riser. After a good covering coat, I then turned the riser so that the front edge was facing me. I then did a single coat right along the edge. Next I turned the riser to the other side and repeated. I did overspray a tad, but over all it isnt bad.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/BlackFade.jpg

A crucial step not to over look when using electrical tape to mask off any area is to remove it as soon as you can, while the paint is still wet. It is tricky and tedious to say the least. If you leave it untill the paint is dry, you can get cracks and peeling at the edges.

Tomorrow I will be putting the purple on in the exact same way, but from the back of the bow. This will blend the 2 colors together nicely.

Today we will be putting the final color, Purple, on!!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Purple1.jpg

This is going to be done in the exact same way as the Black was done, but from the back of the bow. Since it is the exact same method, I wont go into alot of detail, but there will be pics of every step.

First, mask off any areas that you dont want the paint, in this case, the riser cut outs.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Purple2.jpg

Next, hang the riser in your paint area.

Paint as you did with the Black.

Remove masking and hang in your drying area.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Purple3.jpg

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Purple4.jpg

Now let it cure for at least 24 hours. Next we will get into the Clear Coats.

Warped Arrow

While were waiting for the riser to cure, lets go ahead and start on the limbs.

First you will need to make yourself something to hang your limbs on. 99% of my limbs are ILF so I use a bent wire coat hanger.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Limbs1.jpg

Next mask off the tips, butts, and any place you do not want paint.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Limbs2.jpg

At this point, "scuff" lightly with steel wool then wipe clean.

If you are not wanting anything to show through your paint job, then you will need to prime your limbs. Do this as you did with the riser. Personally, I like the emblems to show on a target bow, but not on a hunting one.

Hang them in your painting area and coat in nice even strokes. When finished with the first coat, hang to dry.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/dragonsheart1004/Archery/Wicked%20Bow/Limbs3.jpg

I only paint one side at a time. The back of these will be a totally different color, probably a flat black or gray. I am doing this so that the clolors dont distract me or make me loose focus when shooting.

Next coat, Black!!! Or maybe Purple.....we will see!!!!

Del

Warped Arrow
01-08-2011, 01:30 PM
Decided to go with the Purple next and leave off the black on the front of the limbs. The reason for this is that there is Black in the tips and in the butts. I will paint the back black though I believe.

The way I make the fades is by starting at the end that will be solid. I then paint to where the fade will be. I then start tp feather up away from the fade area. I finish it off by "misting" fast and quick from a distance to leave a few smatterings of the contrasting color.

Well since we have 6" of snow and 3/8" of ice, I wont be doing the clear coat anytime soon. We can discuss clear coats though.

I have found that the best brand of clear coat for my purposes is Krylon Crystal Clear Indoor/Outdoor. It is fast drying, wont crack, yellow, and provides a superior finish. Recoats in 1 minute, handle dry in 10 minutes, cures in an hour, multiple coats anytime. It comes in Satin(hunting bows), Gloss(Target bows), and Semi-Gloss(I dont use this one).

I always buy a fresh can of clear when I do a riser. I never mix brands or batches. I would rather pay for a new batch than take the chance that it has gone cloudy or run out. Also with getting a new batch for each riser, I am sure that there is no chance of mixing brands and finding out that they are not compatable. If I think it will take 5 cans, I buy 5 cans. If I have any cans that havent been used, they are saved for other prodjects or smaller parts. If a can has had its top off, I consider it used, period, and these are tossed. Typically I only buy 2 cans for a riser.

There isnt much prep work to clearing a riser. Basically fill the holes with bolts and hang in your painting area. My first coat is a light coat, as are all the rest. Just spray on like you did the paint. A nice light coat and then stop. you dont want runs here!! When you hang the riser to cure, make sure you remove the bolts or at least loosen them. If you dont, the clear will dry around them and when you try to remove them, it will chip/crack. A good paint job can and has been ruined by this.

It is also crutial that you follow the manufactures directions for recoating. If you dont recoat within the stated times, then the clear wont bond properly causing it to "layer. We dont want this. We want a nice bond between coats so that there is no air between the coats and it is nice and solid. We want it to be like one thick coat, though it is put on in multiple coats. This is another reason I like the Krylon, you can basically recoat anytime.

As soon as this white stuff goes away, I'll be clearing and will have pics to go along with this. Once she is totally done, I will post a pic of her at full draw (still debating on painting the back of the limbs).

The riser I sent you? Well you get to fill in the limb pockets and paint it urban camo. That should be interesting.

No Camo on this bow!! The rest is painted the same green as the riser cut outs. It will make it flow nicely.

FINALLY!!! Its above 50 degrees and sunny!!! WOO - HOO!!!! Clear Coat here I come!!!!!

Since I covered this in a previous post, I wont go over it here. There are, however, a few things in the pics that need to be pointed out.

In pic 1, the riser is hoazontal instead of vertical. This is just for the pic. It was cleared in a vertical position. There are 2 hanger ropes so that I can flip the riser and hang from the other end to get good coverage.

In pic 2 you see the front and the back of the limbs. Once again, this was just for the picture. When I clear them they are facing the same direction, as this makes for a nice, even coverage.

First 2 coats are done!!! Second 2 will come tomorrow!!! Well, maybe, they are calling for a high of only 44 !!!

Got coats 3 and 4 on today!!!!! Painting and Clear are done!!! Still have a lil something to do before I can string her, but she is 99.99% done!! Once these coats cure, I will post pics of her together and shooting.

I did notice one small minor flaw during this set of clear. I didnt get full coverage withthe purple. To late to do anything about it now. I would have to strip her down and start ALLLLLLL over!!!!! That aint gonna happen!!! I will post a pic of that as well.

Ya Pete, its minor, but if I was buying it I would notice it. My goal is to be able to do a riser that I would be proud to sell to another archer. Because of that flaw it wouldnt ever leave my hands, if only for that. By the time I am done, I want it to look like a riser that Earl himself would be proud to have.

Ya never know...If Sam keeps sending me risers like this I may have to send a few to new homes.

Del

Sam, I may have a riser for YOU to tinker with!!!
