A freind dropped of a deer today and I spent the morning cutting it up and putting it in the freezer. What can I say, I'll take free meat even if I didn't get to shoot it. Memories of doing this very thing with dad all those years growing up started to get to me. When I was finished I called dad and talked to him for a while. He was cutting up two he had shot while hunting with my uncle over the weekend.

Anyway, to get to the point, dad told me that Jim, freind of my brother's, offered to let dad and us boys hunt on his property. My other hunting place for this year fell through so I sparked right up when dad told me this. He has 350 acres bordered on three sides by about 3,500 acres of Mark Twain National Forest.

Wednesday dad and I are going out there to scout around to see if we can find a good place to hunt this coming weekend. I know its short notice and the likelyhood of success is low at this point but I will be thrilled just to get to go to the woods this year.

Jim is really into Native American culture so I am going to make him a bow and dad is going to make him a primitive style knife as a thanks for his kindness. His kindness to our family is really a blessing to us. I now have a place to hunt.

...may seem small. But, if you don't go they'll be "zero" and think of the good time you would never have had. Good luck and enjoy your dad while you can. :)

Thanks guys,

Even if I don't see a deer it will be nice just to get into the woods. It is also nice to be able to plan and look forward to next year.

Well we went out today and had a good time in spite of the wind. My brother got sea sick in his stand and had to come down. The wind was pitching & tossing him around up there pretty good.

We did not see any deer but had a nice morning in the woods anyway. We did see some sign and plan to go out and look again another time with muzzle loaders in a few weeks.

We talked to the owner and I found out he is a fellow trad shooter. We got to talking archery and he pulls out a Black Widow, and a Bear Kodiak and other nice sticks. Jim is actually my brother's freind but the two of us hit it off pretty good. He even said I could come to his place and he would help me with my shooting.

He is talking about planting beans and a few other food plots for next year and of course we offered to help him with that.

Next years hunting is looking very promising at this point. If Jim can help me be more consitent with my shooting and lets us help him plant food plots and such to work the place into a deer heaven, I think I am going to actually get to hunt bow, rifle and black powder next year for whitetails. :highfive:

Can you guys see the backflips?

Ray, sounds like a great place. With today's lease-mania and no-go private properties... you are very fortunate indeed. Have fun and hope you put one down next time out!
