Here's the deal folks. I took a buck today. I was not packing a bow but I was shoulder to shoulder with my son and I took a fine animal with a clean shot after standing shoulder to shoulder with the same boy while he took his first deer a few weeks ago. The time was right and the moment was too perfect to pass on. I am now on the hunt for an Alpha doe with my bow.

There's more to the story that I will share later but this beautiful creature paused in the only narrow lane I had. He was one hundred and sixty yards away, plus or minus five, and he dropped in his tracks. The weapon was a 30.06 and the hit was textbook. But the moment with my son is what made the moment timeless and the shot irresistable.

There is more to tell. Another buck, a friend and my other boy. It was a day of memorable FIRSTS! But I will have to add an installment later.

Mike,

You're doing so much right with those kids, that you could basically screw up everything else in life and still come out a winner. Congratulations to you and your bows!

My good friend had not killed a deer before today. Last year we traded spots and I took two. He came up dry. This year we traded again and I killed one but he did not see any. As we were taking care of the one I killed and relaxing with the boys he heard a noise and we all watched as a nice young eight point stepped from the woods 80 yards away. Matt had enough time to get ready and he dropped it with a very nice offhand shot from his .30-30. My middle son was his hunting partner today and both boys got front row seats to all the action.

It was a beautiful day, a successful hunt and both boys got to see it all and stand by our sides. My wife and youngest drove out and joined us for pictures. In the end, we made some memories today that ought to at least hold us until next year - if not a good long time past that!

(BTW DAS, it's kind of you to say so. But I'd be less than honest if I didn't admit that having hunting age and fishing age boys is a pretty fine racket to be in. Not only do I love their company for any old thing, I get to teach them to love them things I love! Having a supportive wife (she drove 30 minutes just to be part of the excitement) - is icing on the cake! God has certainly blessed me immeasurably. Far beyond what I deserve.)

I've hunted many years with Esquire and have come up empty. This year was different. The above buck was my first. My thanks to Esquire and his boys for allowing me in on their family hunt. I count it an honor. It's a good day when I get a little blood on my boots.

Can't wait to taste the jerky!

Esquire,

You sure are creating some great memories with your family and friends.
Congrats Matt and Mike on some fine bucks.

This weekend is our youth gun season and my son can't wait to get out. Luckily I am off this weekend so it should be a good time.

WOW!!! What a great day for all of you. Good for you both. My only regret is that I couldn't be with you. A deer in the freezer is better than a deer in the bush by any lethal means, even road kill. Watch your topknots,

Esquire and Matt,

Great shooting boys!!! I have always said that one deer in the bag is better that 2 in the bush by any means, even a car!!! Watch your topknots,

Pilgrim,

A certain wild and wooley framer that you and I both know used to think that way, until the repair bill on his automobile convinced him otherwise. But when a man is a killing machine as you are with more than his own fair share of luck, both good and bad, he does not need a car!
