Went to a small gun show today.......
Got a nice old Smith & Wesson 29-3, 6 inch, real clean, in the presentation wood case with blue felt form inside....cylinder barely has the "wear" ring.
Then, I found a lightly dinged-up Winchester Model 70 XTR in .25-06 with Redfield base & rings, and leather sling.
Dinged up enough I can hunt it with a clear conscience.
Bought one new, years back, worked the trigger over(paid for that), then my kid started killing coyotes with it left & right, it was the "magic gun" so he bought it from me, of course at about half price.
Playing with my toys, now, whilst watching the news.

You picked up a couple good ones, Steve. (I'm a little envious, but I'll get over it...)

It was fun, I traded off a couple guns that were good stuff, but just not a total good fit for me, so these are 2 real good pieces to have, and the only money out was entry fee.....well that and we ate at Applebee's on the way home.

New/Used guns = Great day. Don't tell me you are enjoying the aroma of open jar of Hoppe's #9 or I'm going to have to go dig in the safe.....

I guess you can play Dirty Harry now. I don't remember what -# his was, but it was a 29 I do believe, and the 25-06, that's a lazer right there.

YEH, Clint's was a 29 but I think it was the 8 3/8" version.......
And I don't have that steely stare part going on........
Hoppe's #9, gotta love the aroma......last few years I clean rifle bores a lot more than I used to, and started using Montana Extreme bore cleaner, also Sweet's 7.62 - and wow those 2 have got the ammonia thing going to a whole new level.

Steve,

you're just having too much fun. Plain and simple, that's the verdict.
Oh, by all means, keep doing so. :)

Hey Steve is the 29 a pin bl? I think, if I remember right, the old ones were 6 1/2, pinned bl and countersunk chambers. Had the logo on the sideplate. Has anyone ever seen a 4 screw 29? I don't think, I may be wrong that there were no 5 screw 29's. The newer ones are 6 inch? and the old ones 6 1/2? Lot of N frame variants. I know the 29 pin gun I used to shoot had to have Pachs on it or my hands would bleed with stiff hard cast pin loads. We figured out later that a 625 with LC 255's would peel them just as good with a full moon load/kick out faster. I never was very good with the 44. I would have to really focus on trigger control to keep from anticipating recoil with full charge loads. On a good day I could manage the 12 inch 100 yard Gong 4 out of 6. That was with a long barrel super black hawk with the steel grip frame, my favorite big magnum to shoot. The thumb busters tend to recoil upward, and the N frame Smiths would drive back into my hand.

Used to pour 260's with wheel weights and then run them through the luber sizer with a gas check on the bottom. Had to lay the gas check in the bottom of the sizer before the bullet. 2400 powder, and I think, 20 grains was the hot puppie for the 260's. We would go up to 22 grains with the jacketed 240's in the single action rugers. We kept these red marked so they would not end up in a Smith revolver. Smiths have their index cuts in the middle of the cylinder which weakens them on high pressure loads. The Rugers were offset to handle this along with big heat treated cylinders. I think all Rugers are offset this way. I liked the old flat top Rugers. I sold them all 10 years ago or so, had quit loading and shooting them. I have had Vaqueros and Bisleys, had a short stint of Cowboy shooting but refused to dress up with Cowboy hat/aka Portapotty/big enough to get a roll of toilet paper under, so I quit and sold them. POOR bOY! LOL

I have also been cleaning my rifle bores more than I use to. I am on a long range kick right now. I'm in the process of trying to build a long range, shooting range. I've got a good open place to put in a 750 yard range.

Not that any of that mattered to why I was posting this, but I accidentally found a good cheap bore cleaner. PB Blaster. Now if any of you don't know what PB Blaster is, you are missing one of the best rust busting penetrating spray oil every invented, but it turns out that it will also cut copper out of a gun barrel and will also do a job on lead fouling in a 22 rifle. Spray the inside of the barrel, let it sit for a few hours, brush and follow with patches. Another trick I learned is that my wifes Swiffer dusting cloths make EXCELLENT patches. They grab copper, lead and fouling better than anything I've ever used. One cloth will make quite a few patches.

I did a little research; The 29-3 came out in 1982. That model eliminated the cylinder counterbore and the pinned barrel.
The 6 1/2" barrel was dropped in 1967.

I had a Ruger Redhawk for a while, with full horse loads, that thing Hurt to shoot! Traded it off for a single six hunter in .17 HMR. Much gentler on the hand.
I have a 29 classic that is much nicer to shoot than the Redhawk.

GUYS, I was thpeaking generically when I thaid thix inch barrell.
Not 4, not 8 3/8" - - was sure of those two.
I've only seen the 3-screws, not heard of 4-or-5 screw 29's.
Mike, good info on the 29-3 thanks.
Brad, I shoot 100, 200, 400, 500 yards at my place, and I could get 600 if I chose to. Lost my 300 yard target when trees grew too tall down in the ditch.
I have a real good custom single shot 700 built in 6br with 8 twist Krieger 30 inch barrell, heavy 40-x rangemaster stock, for my long range toy. I built it for 1000 yard matches, but when I built it I was reading old news, there are better bigger boomers for 1000 now. But I don't think there's a better 500 yard bench gun out there than mine.
Sam, I've shot a lot of 240's in 'volvers but you should see my .44 Marlin shoot 300 Noslers.....just plain wow.
I'll be honest, I prefer my 586 to 44's, I am a .357 die hard.

Five screws had a larger screw in the top of the sideplate and a fifth screw in the front of the frame just above the trigger guard. If I remember right, it held the cylinder bolt spring tension spring. The newer ones require that you use a pick and screwdriver to remove. I like the revolver! just too slow to load vs. auto. I started out with a revolver in Police work cause that was all they would allow at the Academy then. As soon as I graduated it was a 1911 in my holster for 17 years/then the Glock. I remember I was skeptical of the plastic till I shot it, and shot it, and shot it--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Then I was hooked.:)
