Well there was a front moving in this evening and I figured it would get the deer moving so off to the woods after work. But first I had to make a stop at the old farm house where I hunt. The old gentleman turned 90 years old today, and I bought him a new fall camo jacket, so I stopped by the house on the way. Just my luck it was to big so I told him I will exchange it for a smaller one Friday. The smile on the gentlemans face as he tried the jacket on made it all worth while.
As I drove thru the field to get to the woodlot where I would be hunting a few stray dogs came my way across the field barking at me. So I ran at them throwing dirt clods and they took off.
After I got in the tree and things settled down, it was getting close to 5:30 PM. I could hear the dogs barking every once in a while a few hundred yards away. I almost got down because I didn't figure I would see anything.
All was calm except a few more acorns falling thru the trees and leaves. Right at 6:30 the squirrels started climbing around and making noise everywhere around me. A few minuites later I heard a different noise, it was 2 does working their way towards me eating acorns. You could hear them crunching them as they approached. As they passed by me the bigger doe went wide but the smaller one was only about 10 yards away. But I decided not to shoot hoping there would be a few more come thru. After the 2 does got by me I started hearing the crunching of acorn again and from the same direction here comes 2 more deer and one was a nice little 8pt.
I couldn't really tell what the other deer was he circled too far away. The 8pt worked his way to my right and then decided to turn back around and head over towards the other deer. At one point he was only about 5 yards away and almost under my tree. I had to wait until he had cleared a couple of low hanging branches before I could get a shot at him walking away at a quartering angle.
As I pulled the bow up to shoot everything just seemed to go into slow motion as I drew, focused and released the arrow. I heard a pop as the arrow hit and the buck jumped a little then off he went. He didn't go far and I heard him thrashing around in the brush just over the knoll. By the time I could get out of the stand and pack it up it was dark. I only had a small pen light because the other light I had brought bulb popped when I put new batteries in in so I had to leave it in the Jeep. So I had to go back home and get another light and my son for a little help.
When we returned we went up to the tree I had shot the 8pt from and began to search for the arrow and or blood. Bingo within about 10 feet I found a few spots of blood and a few feet later there was the arrow, minus the fletched end, it seemed to have snapped off. After doing a little grid search we found him only about 70 yards away as near as I could figure in the dark. It was a good shot the arrow had went thru both lungs and the Magnus broadhead had done its job.
We finally got back home about 9:30 PM and after hanging the ole boy in the garage for the night the rain started coming down.
Little dance goes here :)
