Sermons We See

Edgar Guest

I'd rather see a sermon
than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me
than merely tell the way.

The eye's a better pupil
and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing,
but example's always clear;

And the best of all the preachers
are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action
is what everybody needs.

I soon can learn to do it
if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hands in action,
but your tongue too fast may run.

And the lecture you deliver
may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons
by observing what you do;

For I might misunderstand you
and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding
how you act and how you live.

When I see a deed of kindness,
I am eager to be kind.
When a weaker brother stumbles
and a strong man stays behind

Just to see if he can help him,
then the wish grows strong in me
To become as big and thoughtful
as I know that friend to be.

And all travelers can witness
that the best of guides today
Is not the one who tells them,
but the one who shows the way.

One good man teaches many,
men believe what they behold;
One deed of kindness noticed
is worth forty that are told.

Who stands with men of honor
learns to hold his honor dear,
For right living speaks a language
which to every one is clear.

Though an able speaker charms me
with his eloquence, I say,
I'd rather see a sermon
than to hear one, any day.

I agree...I've always believed actions speak louder than words ;)

"...He had no beauty or majesty (to attract us to him), nothing in his appearance (that we should desire him).

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of SORROWS, and FAMILIAR WITH SUFFERING.

Like one from whom men hide their faces... he was DESPISED, (and we esteemed him NOT).

Surely he took up our imfirmities and carried our sorrows, (yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by Him, and afflicted).

BUT HE WAS PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, HE WAS CRUSHED FOR OUR INIQUITIES...."

"...Others were tortured and refused to be released...

Some faced jeers and floggings, while still others were chained and put in prison.

They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to death by the sword.

They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--(THE WORLD WAS NOT WORTHY OF THEM).

They wandered in deserts and mountains and in caves and holes in the ground.

THESE WERE ALL COMMENDED FOR THEIR FAITH... yet, NONE OF THEM RECEIVED WHAT HAD BEEN PROMISED..."

"...Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off EVERYTHING THAT HINDERS and the sin that SO EASILY ENTANGLES, and let us run with perseverance the race MARKED OUT FOR US."

Many a "fine" line of thought has been penned and passed from generation to generation that brings short-lived sparks of "inspiration". In fact, many are moved to believe that if they "do it right" enough, the world... the church... and the God of ALL will finally be moved to say, "My! What a wonderful asset YOU ARE to this world!" But be not led astray...

Living the life of an adopted prince~~of a different kingdom, among the enemies and haters of their Father and King of that kingdom, brings now what it always has.

And many a soldier and son of God has "shown" the sermon, from dawn till dusk, only to be driven to echo the grinding cry of that LIVING WORD...

"Eloi, Eloi! lama sabachthani?!"

Rather "see" a sermon than "hear" one?

Try being one...
