:help: I was wondering what your favorite tactic was for bow hunting. not tips like watch the wind(but i'd like to hear those too) , but tactics like stalking corn rows or setting a blind near a low strand of a fence, ect... i was looking for creative ideals to try this season. all tactics and tips appricated.
thanks thomas
:thankyou:

Ok the obvious, WIND, Camo all body parts even face and hands, use all types of cover to get closer, depressions, ravine, hills or a bush to hide your approach, even used a bloated cow one time (only cover), it worked but didn't get the shot off. don't be afraid to get on your hands and knees and crawl up, or even lower, belly crawl, good time to get a pair of knee pads, nothing expensive just something quiet and to protect your knees, elbows will get sore after a few 200-400 yard stalks this way. keep your hunting clothes stored with a native plant.

Welcome to the site, Thomas. :)
Boy, have you opened up a can of worms when it come to me yappin' away about hunting techniques.
To quantify my further rambling, here is some basic inforamtion....
- I've been hunting the same hunting grounds for nearly 10 years.
- It is very flat here, no gullies and rigdetops.
- A lot of corn, beans, and pine tree cash crop separated by smaller areas of woods and marshes.
I don't really have a favorite tactic so to speak. But rather, follow a few rules I set upon myself no matter which area or what type of setup it is....
- never hunt the same setup more than 2 times in a 7 day span. With a maximum possibilty of hunting 14 times in a week (morning & evening), that's why I have as many as 5-7 different locations setup most of the time.
- hunt each setup in relation to past observances if it's generally a morning route or an evening route.
- have no "favorite" stand, and actually prefer moving than staying put if area is not producing a generous amount of deer sigtings in that vicinity.
- hunt the "meat market" areas early season (transition areas from bed to feed).
- hunt the territorial boundaries of bucks and their "search/check" corridors when they start moving in late Oct/early Nov.
- hunt the Does (no matter where they are), when estrous peak of rut has arrived.
- In all cases, no matter what I'm doing... the most important for me is to use the best access routes in and out regarding wind and general knowledge of deer location at the time of access to lessen chances of being detected entering that area.
Sure sounds a lot like Hunting 101, huh? I've learned that following the basics and letting the cards fall as they may, makes for some great hunting.
Probably the only "tactic" that has proven results for me would be this...
Right before and during the time that Does are in heat, I use some of my time afield not only hunting, but also checking certain areas for increased buck activity (rubs/srapes). If I find one that has heated-up more so than the others, this is where I break my own rules and will hunt that stand morning/evening and sometimes mid-day for 2 days in a row. In most cases, this area will be one that I have not hunted yet... imagine that.

No offense but shouldn't this be in the Spike Camp forum? That one is exclusively for hunting and related discussions.

Yes, that is true DA. Seems inevitable that more and more hunting-related threads start showing up in this section during the autumn months. You know, like posts showing harvested game and such. Many have found that viewing exposure is not as high when placed in the Spike Camp and I surely don't hold it against a new member for posting here. You must've missed the Grouse thread and the DAS Hog thread, huh? They were in this section as well. Tends to be the norm around here... I guess someone could change the location of this thread if it's bothersome. I've never done it before, mainly for fear I'd screw something up.

Pinelander,
No I didn't miss those other threads, that's why I finally said something. I started with "No offense..." but you seem to have taken offense none the less.
I kind of thought we should follow the rules but since none of the moderators mentioned it and I seem to have pissed you off, I won't ever bring it up again.

Not at all DA... I was just trying to point out that it's been generally acceptable in the past for such topics to appear in this section and there had been no complaints until now. Thank you for bringing this up and we'll try to do better.
Maybe Esquire can even show me how he moved this over without a crash landing. Thanks, Mike. :)

Oh, one other tactic that I forgot to mention...
When I decide it's time to move a stand setup from one area to another, I try the best I can to use the weather to my advantage. I watch the forecast for expected rain... this will wash away any scent images that I might leave behind. I've sometimes gone to the extreme and use my lunch hour during the week to make a move because rain is on the way that afternoon. Am I just anal about this, or do others think of these things too?

My favorite time to hunt is 11:00 am-1:00 pm ,not sure why but it seems the bucks sleep in out in the swamp LOL I do hunt all day but really like to be prepared at those "off" times
A friend used a rag that he had wiped down my other friends goat with as a drag rag (goats stink specially in rut) turned a 120" 8 pt 90 degrees right to him.
Stratigically place dumps can also move deer towards you LOL I,ve kill 2 bucks so far this way.One of them turned 90 deg. towards me once he got in the stink stream, which by the way I could smell from stand guess I was a little close on that one LOL
Welcome aboard by the way  and Good luck

...wherever they are is where I want to be. My best (most productive) stand in on a two acre building lot. I also spend a lot of time helping landowneers with chores in exchange for hunting their land. Once I get that far whatever tactic I use is going to get me better results than hunting amongst many others where the deer are agitated. :)
Well we don't have any undisturbed deer in Miss as far as I know. Every redneck that dips, chews, drinks and smokes seems to hunt deer with a rifle or shotgun and a dog. My suggestion would be to hunt about 150 yards or so downwind of someone else that doesn't take care of their clothes and scent. Deer will smell them a ways away and circle away from them, usually downwind. That will put them in my lap. I have placed my Dad on a spot before and killed deer this way. :shooting:

ahh sweet revenge. i have got to try that one. my father is a horrible when we went to go hunting He would have got to take a crap. and thats that. but when i was 11 he went to use the bathroom and i shot a 9 pointer with a rifle(the word sends chills down my spine) . scared him so bad he fell in his own poop!!!! he was behind me no saftey concerns! We gave him HE!! back at camp. but those were my rifle days and now i dont pick one up unless im shooting coyotes off my porch in the neighbors pasture(this gets me hunting priviliges) hard to hit a coyote at 300 yards with a bow. i have seen the scent thing used on caribou(sp) but never on deer.

no sweat. when the "urge" strikes, just get 'er done under SOMEONE ELSES tree stand. preferably someone you don't like :p or the guy who normally kills the biggest deer of the year where you hunt. ( be sure & cover it up, payback is a ...well, you know...) ps2

Dang Skippy Swampster. Hey, the way I look at it; family is family but bowhunting is bowhunting. Just got to have your priorities straight. :p
