Well... as is my custom this time of year. I make it a point to go out of my way on the way home to check out the fields around my hunting area. As I mentioned in earlier posts there is a ten pointer that busted me last year. He is an excellent buck, and I have been watching the area all year long. Anyway, I am on my way home tonight from my club's archery range, so I drive by the fields.... in one field there are 3 bucks two basket rack 6 pointers and an much larger 8 pointer. (I stop the truck to watch them)... The two basket racks are*into some decent sparring, they are pushing and shoving I can hear their antlers clacking from the road. They are so oblivious to me, they don't even notice. Neither does the 8 pointer who is feeding, rubbing a small sapling and keenly interested in the subordinate sparring match. I decide not to intrude or interrupt too much and continue down the road. I go no more than 75 yards and on the other side of the road is Mr. Big. My 10 pointer. He is alone underneath a tree browsing, with a couple of does a healthy distant away. WELL......... 30 days to go before the opener!

Again, good luck to you Steve... sounds like a brusier. :)

I hear about those that do some scouting afield prior to the season. Your approach of driving by the fields is an excellent way to case out the population, btw. Guess some bowhunters need to scout if not familiar with new hunting grounds. Might seem a little strange to some folks, but I've gotten to the point that I never scout afield prior to season... same hunting grounds every year and the deer have the same routines from year to year generally. I only find out what's running around on the property AFTER I've started to hunt it. I don't scope out the area ahead of time to find Mr. Big and then hunt him specifically. By the time November rolls around, I've got a good idea as to what bruisers are the local boys and where the best areas for Doe activity seem to be. This is where the long-ranging dominant bucks will show up when it's time. Of course, no guarantees of getting a shot at one of them... but it sures helps knowing the daily activities of the Does when peak rut arrives. Only two more weeks for me and the fun begins!

Steve,
Bought my super sportsmans license at wally world in Allegheny on sunday. After we got done putting a winch on my sons atv we took a cruise thru our lease near Steamburg. Biggest we saw had 3pts. If you need any help I have a well tuned DAS that would look good posing with that 10point!LOL :highfive: Looks like a great year we have not had acorns in 3yrs and this year trees are loaded red and a few white.
Only 15 days til Pa season I am ready to rock & roll. My bow has me more ready than anytime since I gave up the compound.

Thanks, Piney, 1 BJD... good luck to you guys as well.

Piney, I am usually the same way. I know these woods like the back of my hand and where and what animals to expect where. HOWEVER, I have been on the lookout for this 10 Pointer, since the season ended last year. He busted me once. I'm hoping for a shot at him this year. All of the land I hunt is private. Typical rural suburban situation... pockets of huntable land, blended with pockets of land without access. This 10 pt. stays on a private no access farm all the live long day, and only leaves under cover of darkness. My only hope is to catch him.. probably that first crazy week of November when he's out exploring for Does and lovesick.

Good Luck, Folks!!!

Now where "exactly" did you say you live in NY LOL While I,ve not spotted any bruisers as of yet I,ve got a line on a couple. My sister delievers the morning paper and is on the road everyday in the weee hours of the morning. She says "I keep seeing this buck he,s got 6 or 7 points............per side" Yea she hesitated before saying "per side" .Theres always a big 1 or 2 in the swamp every yr ......sometimes they even let me see them......sometimes even real close just not often on that one LOL

Hey John... we're the same way here, the acorn mast is like I haven't seen in quite a long time. Been awfully dry here this summer.
