View Full Version : Cigar anyone???

For some reason, I noticed for the first time that cigars are offered as a topic of conversation in forum discussion topics. I was wondering if there are any "fellow afficionatos". I really enjoy a good cigar and under the proper senario, a quality port along with it. :)
Right now my personal favorite is made by Kristoff; a maduro leguna, 54x6.5" in particular. You guys have any favorites?
Here's a great place to look for and try a variety of cigars in samplers. Have a look. :)

I generally smoke Don Mateo No 1 7"X30. With Port occasionally, Taylor Fladgate vintage if I can get it, but mostly with Armagnac or an Islay single malt.

A nice smoke indeed. I kind of fell into the Atlantic cigar co. and as a result have done some experimenting with their 5 cigar "try em" packs. In doing so, I've been able to find what I do really like.

I do enjoy a cheap cigar while sitting out in the woods, once every couple of weeks. Unfortunately I have not tried any quality brands, I may give your Atlantic Cigar Co. a try. Or I may try a pipe, some day. It's a kind of ritual for me, find a place of solitude, relax and fall into the surroundings, have a little smoke, be at peace for a while, just let things be. Can't beat that.

Tried a Cohiba once.
The real thing, Cuban and fresh, $60 a piece.

I'm a pipe smoker myself. But a word to the wise: pipe smoking takes some practice. Once you get the hang of it, though, there is hardly a better smoke to be had! I personally love Stanwell Jubilee pipe tobacco, a fine Danish mixture, not too sweet, not to smoky, very aromatic!

I used to just chew on a cigar from time to time. I liked to buy the Dutch masters Panetelas. Thought about some the other day, 6 bucks for five? Naaaa, stick with my Wolf fine cut wintergreen.

Used to enjoy the occasional mini, but after a bout with the big C I figured I didn't need more crap in my system.
I enjoy a good bowl of tobacco in a pipe. I'm a fan of clay pipes for a great smoke, but without the cost and care required for good briar pipes. I enjoy the classic english blends and Frogmorton and Penzance.
Nothing like a enjoying a pipe out in the wild, expecially after a long day of hiking, hunting or fishing - just after dinner, watching the sun depart.

How well I remember my grandmother's asking me not to use tobacco, good old soul! She said, "You're at it again, are you, you whelp? Now, don't ever let me catch you chewing tobacco before breakfast again, or I lay I'll blacksnake you within an inch of your life!" I have never touched it at that hour of the morning from that time to the present day.

I do smoke a cigarillo from time to time, if I don't have enough time to enjoy a pipe. I like the Brazilian and Central American tobaccos best. I once got a Monte Cristo from a friend who had vacationed in Havana; it was a bit too strong for my taste and upset my stomach (not nauseous, more like acid indigestion). But whether pipe, cigar or cigarillo, a good smoke is something to be savored on a relaxing evening or a brisk walk out in God's good creation.
Alfred Dunhill, in his famous book on the pipe, quotes a poem on the joys of smoking:
Give a man a pipe he can smoke,
Give a man a book he can read,
And his home is bright with a calm delight,
Though the room be poor indeed.
And, back in the days when advertising was still allowed, the Danish company Stanwell had a slogan:
There are only three things a man needs: a match, a pipe, and Stanwell.
I have fond memories of my grandparents on both sides of the family. My paternal grandfather always had a cigar in his mouth, and my maternal grandfather was an avid pipe smoker. Just getting a whiff of smoke is enough to bring back early childhood memories of happy times together with them.

Short.... Cohiba IMO is a smoke with a large reputation and somewhat smaller value. Don't get me wrong, it is a quality cigar but personally I believe there are a lot of others that are equally as good and for much less money.
Sorry about the green skin. Green is better worn on outer garments! :)

I smoked a Dominican Corona/paradora yesterday. It was a bit smoky at first, but once it warmed up, it was nicely aromatic, down to about the last inch, when the smoke began tasting acrid. This was by no means an expensive cigar, but neither was it a cheap stogie. I figure, you don't have to spend a fortune for a good smoke, and is a $60 cigar really that much better?
For any of you who might be tempted to try a pipe, here is a link to a great site where pipe smokers have reviewed almost every tobacco on the market!

That picture is of my humidor. The wife asked me if I saw anything I liked when we were down in Mexico a while back and I said "See what he'll take for that skull, but have fun arguing with him don't just give him what he first asks." Well they went back and forth awhile, she'd smile and start to walk away and he'd chase her down and start all over again bargaining. I got a kick out of watching, and he wrapped it up with a big smile on his face. The TSA picked it up on the x-ray in the airport in Memphis and had to remove it from our checked luggage to see if it was real. When I got home I put it "him" on the humidor and named him "Moderation". Funny thing is I smoked a good cigar from it in that same plaza in Mexico back in November but haven't smoked another since. He is doing his job well I guess you could say....;)

Wow, Bow, that's pretty macabre! It is fun to haggle on prices, though. A buddy of mine from work was in Mexico. When the dealer named his price, my buddy said, "No soy Gringo! Soy Aleman!" (I'm no gringo, I'm a German!). He told me that they immediately dropped their price by 50%!

This thread reminds me of a story. I smoke an occasional cigar, nothing fancy though. I've got a thing for Copenhagen. Started that when I was 13. I was camping with some buddies a few months after I started dipping. Back then I didn't dip enough to go through a can before it got dried out. We were camping on our farm, and I had taken a couple feed sacks to start our campfire with. I was going to be a badazz so I told the guys I was going to roll a cigarette. I tore off a piece of the feed sack, poured it full of dried Copenhagen, rolled it up and lit it. One good drag is all it took to burn all the feed sack and most of the Copenhagen. I fell backwards off the log I was sitting on and laid there for a while kind of moaning and groaning. That pretty much broke me from smoking.

10-05-2010, 06:59 PM
I'll give you an Amen. That's great. I've quit 486 times. The longest I stayed quit was 6 months. I quit early fall, somehow made it through deer season, then went fishing for the first time that spring. Stopped, bought a can to get just one dip, felt like I had never quit. No burn, no rush. I don't see how Heroine could be any harder to kick than Copenhagen.
It's been 15 years, do you still want a dip sometimes? My brother quit about 3 years ago and he still says he could eat a can of it.

Trad Archer, you should try the CAO Maduro absolutely! A great cigar for small money.
I prefer the belicoso shape. About 6$ for a great smoke.
Here in Germany its much more expensive. So I have to wait everytime, till somebody brings some boxes from the united states over the big pond.

Tom,
I'm brand new to traditional archery. I just bought my first bow and will be taking my first lesson next week (there's an archery range just down the block from my daughter's piano teacher's house).
I shoot rifle at the Calverton range out here in eastern Long Island though and am looking forward to finding out more about archery in Suffolk County. Suffolk County Archers looks like a great place and is located about 15 minutes from my house here in East Northport. Let me know if you're planning to come out anytime.

Steve, FYI I use to conduct firearms training out at Calverton (for the FBI) prior to my retirement. Side note: The absolute best instructor, certainly east of the Mississippi, and likely in the country is Len Cardinale. I couldn't think of a better way to begin your archery than to take a couple lessons from him! If you think you'd like to talk with him first, let me know, I can get you his contact info.
I'll hopefully remember about comming out this summer. A couple of us have been thinking about it for some years now. :)

Currently I split my time between Flushing, Queens and East Northport. My daughter's got art and piano lessons on different nights and there's a local range here in Flushing - but I would like to take you up on your offer and contact Mr. Cardinale for when I'm out at the house in weekends. what would you fellows regard as a "bottom-end" cigar? best quality for your dollar for someone wanting to know what a decent cigar tastes like? i can tell you that the ones from a tobacco shop as freebies to "try out" made me want to rush home & lick the dirt/cow flop out of the tread on my hunting boots to kill the flavor ...

I also like a Maduro wrapped cigar and I used to dip the ends in wine for extra flavor. My favorites however were Arturo Fuente candela wrapped about a 46 ring churchill if I remember correctly. I would get them from Thompson Cigar out of Florida. I have given up cigars in exchange for running though. They don't mix whatsoever. Say what you will about not inhaling a cigar they will make you suck wind pretty hard if you want to be physically fit. I do find myself enjoying the smell of a good cigar if someone fires one up though to this day.
