I am going to attempt my first selfbow soon and I was wondering if I should start with a stave to get the complete experience or should I start with milled wood since I will most likely blow up a few at first.If I start with staves ,does anyone know where I can purchase some in the Denver area?

Hickory is very forgiving in terms of grain violation and is not that hard to work with. I think it is a good choice for a beginner whether it be a board or stave. You might get lucky and find a board with a good crown the length of the board.
