View Full Version : Those Wimpy Target Arrows

Thought I would help get the new site started with an interesting story.

I always thought target arrows were kind of wimpy and delecate, especially those skinney ones that are so popular with the FITA/NAA crowd. I was sure hunting and field arrows were tougher (more manly - LOL).

Shooting in the State Senior Olympics yesterday I was squaded with a couple Olympic Recurve shooters and an 81 year young guy shooting a compound (who out shot the rest of us by the way). One of the Olympic guys moved his sight the wrong way when we went from 60 yards to 50 yards and his first arrow was about 2 feet low. We had set the 2 clipboards with 4 scorecards each against the front of the 2X4 target stand.

The guy with the sight error was shooting Easton 480 Navigators out of a 40 something # recurve. He nailed the clipboards with that first errant shot.

When we went down to score and pull arrows we found his Navigator had penetrated both clipboards, one of the metal clips, a pencil and about an inch of the pine 2X4. When we finally got it out, that skinney little target arrow was in perfect condition. Not bent, not broken, not even cracked. Damn thing was tough as...well a hunting arrow (smiley face goes here).

Just thought you guys would get a chuckle out of this one,
Dave

Hank,

I am trying to get my courage up (and the checkbook braced) to buy a dozen Navigator shafts. When I do, you can be sure I am going to do everything I can to get them to "...a near perfect flying arrow..." (LOL)

Believe it or not the navigators make great hunting arrows. Nice skinny shafts Penetrate, but are expensive. That’s why I use redlines for everything. :D

Van, I think Redlines are one of the most underrated arrows for the money. I don't understand why they aren't more popular.

Because of those big 52" Whitetail targets used in FITA stuff, I don't damage too many arrows in target shooting. I will probably save the Navigators for that.

Field archery, my first love, is another matter. I still toss one into the desert or into the frame of the target bale on occasion. I'm thinking of trying Redlines for that. I wanted to use ACCs but they tend to run a little short.

F/S Discount put out a flyer with Easton's new prices. Redlines are $74.95/doz for shafts. They used to sell for about $65. You might find some NOS (new old stock) for close to that price if you shop around.

The Navigators went up from $149.95 to $179.95 for a dozen shafts (ouch!) but that ain't the worst of it. For folks like Limbwalker, who has the skill to utilize them, X10s are now $341.95/doz for shafts. Heck, I've bought bows for less than that (LOL).

I think the Redlines are running 60-70 for a dozen bareshafts, could be wrong. I've heard that many of the Beman shafts are practically the same shaft as the Eastons. Here's a nice comparison chart on carbons. I've found the prices listed are very close to what they are around here at the pro-shops.

Wasn't there some reason that there was (or is going to be) a price increase in arrows across the board?

There is going to be a Federal tax of something like $.37 on each arrow shaft, no matter the value. Cheepest kids arrows or Olympic X10s, its the same tax. Adds $4 and change to every dozen (arrows or shafts). Goes into effect the end of March if my memory is correct.

I had heard at 3Rivers a week or so ago that fletching was going up. They didn't mention arrow shafting.
But I'm not surprized, everything else is going up, except our wages and income ( unless you are in the top 10% or so of course  )

Sheez... wasn't enough they had to tax the bows, and now it's the ARROWS.

I found a high speed video filmed as a marketing flavored comparision of arrows hitting concrete blocks. My arrows from the same manufacturer (vapor) are hanging on my wall and look exactly alike:
