While shooting at our last 3d we were talking about some of the scores in the primitive class. The winning score was HALF what the scores were in other classes! I don't know maybe this is just normal but it seems way out of line to me.I have always thought if you can shoot one bow you can shoot them all. :)Anyway to test my theory I now have a bamboo backed bow with an actionboo belly to find out! I got someone to glue up a blank and tiller it for me.I wanted to put on the tip overlays and cut any shelf that was needed.I have it shooting now with a 10 strand D97 string and some 5/16 cedars on the way.
This bow smokes at about 150fts and puts the arch back in archery. :) The next shoot I am going to shoot my regular class and then shoot the primitive class with this one.If my ideas are correct I plan on raiseing the bar for the guys shooting that class.

They'll just lower the bar on the equipment. Rules like "bows must be constructed of a single piece of wood - no laminations" -or- "bows must be shot off the knuckle". And, of course, one of the clubs Warf shoots created the "warf" rule where you can be placed in the compound class if they think you are aiming (i.e. shoot better than they think you should).

There's a Guy ( his real name) who shoots a selfbow in 3D competition in the longbow class. He usually wins or places second. He usually wins the money on the 100yd shoot. I've seen him hit the 10 on the 100yd target and about 8 out of 10 times he hits the target.

Well I don't really care if they put me in the unlimited class. :) I just want to see if it makes that big of difference in my own score.I think the longer shots might be a little harder at first but I think you can adjust for that.I know there are some guys out there that can shoot great with woodbows but it does not seem to be the norm around here.I think those good shooting guys would be able to do it with any kind of bow you put in there hand as well. That being the reason for me giving it a try. :) I just like to play and shoot arrows. :shooting:

James,

I have a friend who belongs to the British Longbow Society. These folks shoot "real" longbows, i.e. made of Yew in a "D" cross section, horn tips, wrapped handles with no shelf...the real deal.

Their annual shoot in Colonial Williamsberg used to be the York Round. That one starts with 72 arrows at 100 yards. Talk about putting the "arch" back in archery!!

Best of luck to you. Show those guys it's the archer, not the equipment!

Some of the best scores I've ever shot were with one of a number of Fedoras that I own. But.... the ol' metal handles tend to be attached to some of the fastest, most high performance limbs on the planet. They're also heavy and stable and so.... I think they're easier to shoot well. Besides, since I like a plunger and flipper setup, I've found that I might as well shoot metal risers since I catch just as much crap if I shoot a rest on a wooden bow.

Well I just back from the practice range from the first time with the bamboo bow.It went real well.In fact a little better than I thought. :) I beat both of the guys I was shooting with useing there regular glass bows. Then I switched to the "Green Goblin" and got a few of there quarters. ;) Life is good in a primitive sort of way.

Hey James...
You'd really be "primitive looking" if ya used a string like this... :D

I also found one of these when I was digging through some old stuff looking for a string to fit my old BW target bow that came in today (where's my String PB, hehe). Since I've yet to learn how to make strings, was fortunate that someone packed it incorrectly about 30 years ago. Was supposed to be a 60-1/4" string for 64" bow, but is actually 64".

Piney they look old to me. :) Just because I am shooting a wood bow does not mean I am giving up my dynaflight.

Piney,

Man did you take me back a few years with that first picture. My very first bow was a solid fiberglass one from Shakespear. My first "real" bow was from Indian Archery. It was a lemonwood flat bow with a ivory colored backing of fiberglass (belly was bare wood) and a leather wrapped grip. The logo on the box it came in was not much different than your picture. I think they had dropped the "and toy company" buy then (late '50s) but were still in Evansville, Indiana.

That was the bow I got my archery merit badge with in the Boy Scouts of America. Yea, I belonged to that subversive group as a kid. Went to church three times a week too (LOL). Despite what the counter coulture says, not everything about the '50s was bad.
