View Full Version : Shelf Lining for carbon arrow shooters

I am still experimenting with the right lining when using carbon arrows.
The recent lining was made of handle bar grip closed cell palstic, being quiet, wear resistant and easy to handle.

When it got worn (the friction and noise incresed all the time) I decided to exchange it. I used the cut off ends of new carbon shafts to get an impression what might work better. When trying the soft part of velcro tape the shafts seemed to moove with a lot less friction (hand testing only).

Using velcro I got now 1/4 to 1/3 flyers and considerable noise. Arrows feel faster though.

I do not like leather, at least those I tried because of the terrible noise. What do you use for carbon arrows?

Please note: all carbon shafts are not alike, many have a varnish (Vapor, Beman) and others are apperantly ground in a drum mill Carbon Express... thus plain carbon. The latter causes the frictionto increase considerably.

I would appreciate any comments, even if I am probalbly going to exaggerate 'carbon mystery' now.

Sorry for my ignorance. :mistake:

Torsten: I am assuming you are using the soft component of the Velcro system which I have used for several years successfully. I've got no thoughts about improving its performance other than putting something like a section of round toothpick under it to form horizontal and vertical pressure points. That accellerates the wear, but reduces the area that the arrow touches.

I can also recommend waxing the carbon shafts with a good car wax. It does an especially good job on the Carbon Express shafts because of their relatively porous factory finish. This also has benefits for hunting penetration and arrow removal from 3-D targets.

Grey Fox,
The wax is a great idea.
I took silicone based marine wax. It does a great job at reducing friction and noise. I will go out soon and test it.

Many thanks

Torsten,
I remember George Teckmitchov of Hoyt/Easton posting in another forum that silicone is not a good thing to use with carbon shafts. I guess if I dig enough in my archives I may find the precise comments he made, but that's the general idea. Do you want me to look for that post?
