View Full Version : Recommend a broadhead...

It will be used to hunt whitetails and hogs. Arrow weight in the 550-600 range and shooting 51# recurve.
Here's what I'm looking for in a head.
1. Glue on
2. 125-150 gr
3. Easy to sharpen, (although after reading PB's post, it may not be such a huge factor. Thanks, Papa Bull)
4. I think I want to stick with a two blade head, or a 2 blade with bleeders (ie: Zwickey Delta 4blade).
5. Ease of tuning (I figure all will be about the same if the are mounted correctly and the bow is tuned, but thought I'd mention it.)
I have thought about Zwickey, Magnus, STOS, Grizzley...
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

My personal preference would be the 130g. STOS.

I think the Magnus and Zwickeys are the best in class for no other reason except that both have proven to have the qualities I look for in a broadhead:
Good arrow flight
tough
good cutting diameter
quality steel
easy to sharpen/resharpen
consistent
priced very competitively
Overall, I prefer the Magnus heads, although there are a lot of people shooting Zwickeys because they've been around forever and lots of bowhunters simply never saw a reason to switch.
Grizzlies are about as tough a head as was ever made but when hunting smaller game like deer, I think the heads I already mentioned cut better, are easier to get super-sharp and the near indestructibility of the grizzlies isn't necessary.
One thing you might consider with the Magnus heads is that you can order the 4 blade version with the bleeder blades and shoot it as a 4 blade or if you choose you can remove the bleeder and use it as a 2 blade head. Magnus is a quality head but then again so are the other heads you mentioned.

Wensel Woodsmans. They meet all the above Criteria.

I was going to add the Woodsmans to the list, too, but I saw that one of the criteria was 2 or 4 blade heads, so... Woodsmans and Snuffers, no matter how effective are off the list.
Anyone interested in getting some Razorcaps? I'm thinking about bringing them into the shop if there's any interest in them. They're like a Woodsman except that they're better steel and come in a number of different weights.

Pappabull,
I'm interested in the razorcaps. I like the ease of changing weight. I hate messing with weight tubes or nock inserts with carbon arrows and often shoot a 65# recurve, so it's kind of a pain getting cheap carbons up to 9-10 grains per pound. I figure I could just spine them a little heavy and use a 200 grain adaptor up front.
I know there's a lot of debate abot FOC and all of that, but I won't be shooting game over 25 yards, so penetration is much more important to me than arrow flight at a distance.

Cool. If a few more people are interested, I should be able to meet the minimum quantities for an order for you guys.

Shoot, all of those are good choices. I have heard that some have trouble sharpening the Grizzlys. Their points look very crude to my eye, but they must work.
I'll cast my vote for STOS first, Magnus second. :2cents:

I shoot magnus 140 gr. Got to stay with them at least until I get a new dog anyway. :)

Stos 130s or 145s for easy sharpening.Simmons 135 intercepter for a wider cut and a little more work sharpening. Both of these are tough on hogs and just slice through deer from lighter weight bows.Of course the woodsman will do it just as well if you decide on a 3 blade. :)

simmons 150 intercepters........once one learns how to sharpen them......they simply unzip anything you put them through........most awesome bloodtrails from a two blade...............elkdreamer

I've been using Simmons broadheads for the last 12 years and have had no reason to switch.

...having Razorcaps would be good. Once i shot one instinctively into my basement wall and the wall took more of a beating than the Razorcap.

Bill,
That's because you obviously weren't doing it right...unless of course you were trying to hit the wall ;)

It had to be an instinctive shot because I don't remember aiming! :inst

Than you weren't shooting "instinctive" becuase you have to aim in order to do it righte...at least with your subconscious thta is ;)

...not being conscious at all during the shot...had to be instinctive!

Bill,
So were you knocked unconscious or were you subconsciously using the force? ;)
If you hit the cement wall and weren't trying to, I've heard of a little planet not to far away, where there's a little goofy looking guy that could show you how it's suppose to be done...If you don't want to make that trip, I would be happy to offer my services at a reasonable rate ;)

Well, I think I'm going to try a couple different kinds. I placed an ad in the classifieds looking for Magnus, STOS, and Zwickey heads. Let me know what you've got. Thanks.

I too was going to recoomend the Snuffers but then saw the requirments. LOL
Its what I use anyways for what its worth.

I am very interested in the RazorCaps with the way they are laser welded and the versitality of changing weighted ferrels and use the same blades.
I was turned off them only due to the price of 3 can get ya 6 of the snuffers or woodsmans.

Any of the ones mentioned will do the job just fine. Some folks seem to have a hard time getting the 3 blade heads sharp compared to the 2 or 4 blade heads.
I shot a snuffer into a cinder block.......the block got a big chunk knocked out of it the 2317 pushing it stayed straight and the BH had only a small dent at the tip which was easily filed out........I also attempted an "instinctive" shot......ofcourse it was from 40 yrds useing a compound that did actually have sites on it LOL I was just pulling my head away to watch it fly figurein I,d hit the back stop LOL so much for figurein
The woodsmen IMO will not pass that test I,ve got bent ones to prove it....never treid it on the other heads mentioned however a screw in phantom head doesn,t hold up to angle iron as well as it does alum covered plywood. The alum covered plywood was no problem blowing thru with little to no damage

Shoot them at what they are for and they all will do fine lol. I prefer the WWs or the magnus vented 125s for price- ease of sharpenig and they fly good.

I've used Zwickey 2-blades for a very long time, easy to put an edge on them and they're tough. Gonna try some Wenzel Woodsmans and Muzzy Phantoms this year. Seems like just about any durable head that you can get a razor-sharp edge on is a good one.
Never used a WW before, but the ones I got from Lambow sure look like a wicked, big hole-opener to me. With 3 blades at 2-1/2" long, that's a lot of cutting edge.
I like the Phantoms too (but they're screw-ins), maybe others would like to see them anyways. They sharpen real nice and the bleeder blade is very long and wide compared to others... same 1-1/8" wide as the main blade and a whole 1" long. You can sharpen them very easily as well. The main blade is 2" long. I picked up another 3-pack the other day at Gander Mtn, seems they are trying to clearance them... was 19.99, got 'em for 9.99. Same blade that is now packaged as a Muzzy product. Here they are in the old packaging before Muzzy bought 'em out...

I got my phantoms at walmart after the season on clearance.I,ve got 14 bucks invested into 15 heads....
As for the angle iron LOL it wasn,t part of the game plan just worked out that way.
