View Full Version : Problems with Shelf Lining

Carbon arrows again:
when I cover the shelf with leather, the arrows make a very loud noise during the release from the shelf. Carbon shafts and leather do not work together.
Each arrow type has a different surface structure and properties and therefore causes different noise levels during the release.
When you shoot directly from the shelf, what material do you use for the lining?
How long will it stay?
What noise you get during the release?
Velcro tape (soft part) helps a lot and is very quiet but will not stay for a long time.
I would highly appreciate your recomendations.

On one of my recurves I put a piece of velco(the soft stuff) over the leather. It's held for over a year now. Sealskin works fine also.

I like a piece of cordovan leather for the shelf, very long wearing. For the sideplate I like a small piece of Limbsaver rubber covered by a thin piece of buckskin, acts like a poor man's plunger. With this combo I get no arrow/shelf noise no matter if aluminum's or carbons. If you are getting noise from the shelf on release I would say your nocking point is to low causing the rear of the arrow to strike the shelf....warf

When I shot off the shelf I used a thin piece of leather or calf hair with a small piece of leather (match stick size) over the pressure point. I like Bob's idea for the limb saver better. On the shelf I usually used either the loop (soft) side of velcro or a high brush moleskin. I think the piece I had was a Bear rug rest. Noise was never a factor. I read that the softer shelf material helped arrow flight by absorbing some of the arrow oscillation. Made sense in theory. Seems like a strip of limbsaver on both the shelf and window covered by something thin would be the best setup. Maybe go a little thicker on the shelf.
Now supposedly Robert has some new shelf rest in the prototype stage that sounds like it might work nice. So far pictures of it have been as scarce as ones of the lock ness monster. :D
Out of curiosity Torsten have you tried an elevated flipper rest? If your not bound by some competition class rules they really are a super setup and very quiet. Once I tried one I don't think I'll ever go back unless it would be to shoot in a class where a shelf setup was required. :2cents:

Torsten, check the archives out . Type in elevated rest, springy rest, flipper rest, brush rest, super rest or stealth rest. Lots of stuff. I use a slice of silicone fishing worm. Very springy, doesn't freeze, absorb water and tunable { though it's a pain in the rear}. I don't know about Finland but here in the states every backyard that has little kids generally has one or two of those sponge covered ballbats laying around somewhere. That sponge has the same properties as the fishing worms. I've used both, the sponge is actually eaiser to work with. Anyway the kids won't miss a small chunk or even the whole bat. The neighbor's kids or dog will probably get the blame, so you'll be in the clear no matter what. Hope this helps, so many rests-so little time.

Here's some pictures of the rest Bob was referring to... I believe Limbwalker posted it sometime ago on the old forum.
