Well my winter indoor spot league starts tonight. It is a couples league I'll shoot with my wife.

This year I am shooting my Bernardini Luxor with Medium W&W Inno limbs. It draws about 42-43# at my draw. I'm shooting 2314 aluminiums with 165gr tips and big ol 5" feathers.

I am shooting barebow class, stringwalking. I'll be shooting a five spot to save wear and tear on the big aluminiums so better hold well or I'll be getting some M's.

My goal is to average in the 270's.

LOL - the league I shoot in does a 450 Vegas so I'm spared from getting beat regularly by Scott.

Our NFAA State Indoor is toward the end of Feb. They haven't decided if their going to do the 300 Round or some form of Vegas round. I fear the 300 Round is on it's way out in our state as all the compounders like the Vegas. Myself and the other two recurve shooters can't be heard over the clicking of the releases being set. I understand,, I went to a Tournament in Twin Falls, Saturday.
I was the ONLY BB, and ONLY Trad guy there..
Shot my first 450 BB 379 10x Hoyt Oasis plus riser, Hickman limbs 42@30, 2413 x7 shafts full length
Shot my second 450 Trad 369 5x PSE Coyote riser, modified the Great Plains Estacado limbs to fit, 59@30, 2117 full length, 100 grain points
hard to loose to yourself.. All on the Vegas 1 spot..

Good shooting Big Cnyn

Dave,

Remember if it wasn't for those compound boys we might not have any archery orgs right now. The time slot we shot in this weekend there were three recurve shooters and my wife and I were tow of them.

I like the 450 round a lot. It would seem that either that round or even a FITA 300 round would take away some of the complaints that some trad archers have with the NFAA 300 round. That being two many arrows or an inability to maintain their focus for 5 arrows and 12 ends. It you take the 300 round it is only 3 arrows for 10 ends.

Our league starts for me on Wed night. I'm using a Chekmate Falcon wood recurve shot off the shelf. I like the 300 round even though I consistently fall victim to the pressure of the line. Good for concentration I guess.
How does a 450 round work?

Good Luck to All,

Either the 300 or 450 Vegas rounds are generally shot on the 3-spot Vegas face, which has the X through 6 rings of a 40 cm FITA, multi colored face (scored 10-1). For the 300 version you shoot two fifteen arrow games, each of which is made up of five 3-arrow ends. The 450 round just adds another game so it's 45 arrows total. Recurves, beginners and kids are allowed to shoot it on a single 40 cm face.

The league I shoot in has been around for 10 years at least. It started back in the '90s and I've been told a couple times I'm the only barebow shooter to ever participate in its history. A few recurves have shot there at one time or another but they were all Olympic recurve shooters.

Scott, at last year's NFAA State Indoor Championship I was the only recurve to participate, and obviously the only barebow anything. Even then I didn't win anything because our state organization has gone to a score based classification system. I shot against the Class C compounds...and got my ass handed to me (LOL).

I've only ever shot the 300 on the 40cm single blue face or the Blue 5 spot. Does the "Vegas" classification mean it's always a multicolor 3 spot face?
Thanks for the info Dave.

Dave that is what I am worried about.. I was the only shooter in BB and Trad, They told me 3 to make a class. I paid 2 entry fees and they did give me 18 of the 30 dollars back for winning both my divisions..LOL I wonder about the State Shoot in Nampa coming up. I drive 4 hours stay 2 days and don't win thing for being the only one.. ?

We are meeting tomorrow night to set up our club's indoor league at the new range. It should begin within a week. Hard to say which game they'll choose, a lot of the players like the Vegas Round. Either one will be fine by me.

We are definitely a minority and it does make it a little harder to justify the expense and trouble to get a recognized score on the books in State and National matches. You still have to shoot tournament conditions though, then you can at least compare your scores to all who have been before and will come after.

DA, you're right, shooting against Scott's scores here will be a lot more pressure than anything down at the range for me, but a great motivator too. I shoot the same style as Mike, so am resigned to hind tit for awhile.

crunch,

I've never been to Vegas so anyone who has can correct me, but I was told anyone who asks can shoot on the 40 cm, multi color face instead of the 3 spot target. The compounders just don't like breaking arrows, shooting off feathers and busting nocks so they pick the 3 spot.

Well I must have misread something as the couples league at my club turned out to be a 450 FITA league. So we shot that last night.

I shot a 392 and my wife a 359. I'll just add these to the thread in the shoot scores forum.

My 300 round league starts tonight, but I shot ahead on saturday for reasons many of you know. I got a 244, don't recall X count. I am very confident that I will be able break 250, and will be dissapointed if I don't break 260.

Equipment is KAP Winstar II riser, Samick Mizar limbs, 41lbs @ 31". 12" Doinker stabilizer, Champion II rest and Cartel triple plunger. Arrows are Gamegetter 400's (2117's) 32" with big 5" shield feathers and 175 up front.

Yes, we can shoot the big (40 cm) colored target instead of the three spot, and that is what I'll be doing starting next Tuesday. We are going to shoot 5 weeks of Vegas leading up till "Vegas" which is Feb. 5-9 this year, and then 5 weeks of Blue Face 300 round.

That will take us to the last week in March, then going to start a new Field league in April! Our first State Field shoot is the 3rd or 4th week in April. It is 3 hours away but I really want to shoot some different courses and in competition this year.

Anyway, will start posting some scores next week with you guys, league season is here!

I shot the 300 last Wed. night on our first league night and, well truthfully, I fell apart. I've been reading all the posts about nerves on the line and yup they smoked me. I ended up with a 200 3x.
Oh well, it is only the first night out. I hope to somewhat redeem myself next week.

Good Shooting Everyone.

Shot the Vegas league Tuesday nite, big turnout, which is very good to see. 38 signed up.

I wound up with a 472, sounds impossible huh? Well we shot 60 arrows.

That's an average of 23.6 per end, so somewhere around 354 for a 450 game. I didn't start off real well and had some 19 and 20 point ends, but made up later with a few 27's and a 30. :)

There was a meeting before about whether we were going to use an 80% scoring system or classes from C to AA. I never heard the decision, but am just going to shoot for the experience anyway and see where I land. There are five recurve shooters and just two of us with no sights.

I definitely have more trouble with the FITA face than the blue 40 cm, but got my point on up high enough to find something on the bale when it's high or low target. Looking forward to next week.

Also next week on the 22nd we are starting a traditional league at the same range, I understand there are 12 or so that say they will shoot. I have heard that it will be half blue face one week, indoor 3-D the next. I think there is a JOAD class those evenings, which would mean the 3-D part is wishful thinking. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to skip it, I can always go to a real one if I want.

Way to go Mark, you're right there, just step on up.

What we substitute for league is a Shoot Your Way Across Texas, which means that different shops across Texas host weekend shoots and all the scores are posted so we compare. Kind of a mail-in league, but a little more formal.
Last weekend we shot at the 11 Gander Mountain stores in Texas and there were overall winners decided by class. I shot a 274 in Adult trad, a 272 in Senior trad, don't remember the X count.
I changed my drawing arm form Friday and today shot a 269 in Adult and 268-18 in Senior. Still need some work, but I shot 3 25s in the last 6 ends, so I think it is beginning to take hold.

crunch,
In my experience, split vision got me to the high 250's before I decided I wanted to use the 300 for something more than a way to improve my 3D abilities during the off-season. When I made that decision, I tuned my setup to hold the point at 6 o'clock on the spot, no matter what it took. Maybe that could be called gapping.
People told me that shooting 20 yard indoors so much would ruin me for 3D. I shot 3D with some of those guys about 3 weeks ago after shooting 16 3d targets the day before. My 300 on their 30 target home course against their 281 and 277 made them start thinking they are going to shoot more 20 yard indoors. I used my 3D/hunting bow, not my target bow.
If you want to improve your 300 score, I think you need to adopt an aiming technique more suited to it. I do not believe making that change will hurt your other shooting, but the improvement in form and mental approach may well help.

I love your attitude and have no doubt you are going to be knocking on the door in no time at all! I still have a few issues I am working on, such as getting a better feel for my release with the change in my drawing arm position, but when that is ingrained here in the next couple of weeks, I will be shooting 280's.

Farm out BigCnyn. That is some good shooting. It is fun to watch this progress in so many different places.

We had 17 people show up to join the Trad league last night. Warms my heart. I shot high score last night with a 257 and ? X's. Hope I can hang, the old champ matched me for the first two games 86,85, but he hasn't been shooting that many arrows and dropped the ball in the last 20. We are handicapping 80% off the top score.

Shot a 357 Tuesday in the Vegas league, so nothings changed there either, but it sure feels like I'm ready to rise above this plateau.

BigCnyn, sounds like that worked well for you, I have thought about trying a clicker off and on. Good shooting.

gitnbetr, I am so unsurprised. You and BC and Scott are inspiring. 285 was a fine goal, I think the more you experience shooting in crowded or tourney/competition settings over 280, the more likely you will easily win a National title. Same for BC if that is in his plans. It's an honor and a hoot to correspond with you guys about archery!

I spent a little time with my mentor, the 2-time champ, tonight. He is letting loose with a few more tips now that his national level competition is over. It is nice to have that kind of eye looking over my shoulder.

Tonight he helped get my point up higher, something I'm still struggling with, by adjusting the tiller on my bow of all things. Really looking forward to this weeks leagues to see if my scores are going to get a little boost. I'm very optimistic.

Scott, that is good shooting. I sure hope you do well in the NAA shoot coming up, and that goes for all here who will compete.

I was pretty certain back in Dec. that I would be up to 270 by now, but it is just not the case. I can't even match my 261 again, though I have had 259's, 257's. Now that we are off the FITA face I hope I can focus on the blue spot and make some progress.

Twice, including last night, I have had some "anxious" rounds. Last week it was bad enough to land me a 241. What I mean is that when I was getting to anchor, I was shooting before I told my brain OK. So then I am thinking oh heck, I don't need TP now that I'm really starting to enjoy this kind of shooting!

Last night I started off with two 23 point ends and then got "anxious" and shot a 16. I was almost resigned to the dreaded affliction. Figuring things out in the middle of a scoring league kinda sucks, but I had nowhere to go. ha ha

I simply decided to try telling myself not to shoot until I settled on my "picture", something I used to always do. (talk to myself clear through the sequence)

Well it worked pretty darn well although I did shoot a 17 and an 18 end too, cause I'm a jerk. Also had an end going, 4 fives with 2 X's and then flung a stinking 2! I guess that's why we do it, to change those to better results. :)

I'm going to keep my head up and see if I can get past this plateau, but it's not going to bring me down if I don't. I'm setting this years goal at 270, wish me luck or give me tips, I don't care. :)

I wound up with a 252, so if I had not dropped the ball on those 3 ends I could have gotten a new PB. "IF" I had shot all 5's I would have got a 300. ha ha

Of course I started this the day before a shoot.:) I shot so badly people were asking me if I was OK (seriously), but still pulled out a 277 the first round and then started experimenting and was shooting better groups, but low. Finished with a 266.

BigCnyn, that must have been a real nice surprise when you walked up on it! 5X!

It's a real pleasure being here and sharing what you guys are doing. First DA got me fired up about Field (still am) and gave me someone to share those little victories of progress with, and now this indoor chat with some absolutely great shots.

It's a blast.

Fellow archers, I've been "lurking" a lot lately, with not much to say, especially the way you all have been shooting... WOW! But this is all about making progress so... here's what I've been shooting lately.

There is some really good shooting going on here. Congrats everyone!

I shot a 235 on a make-up round Saturday and a 241 last night. My first game was rough but I got an 88 on the last game so I feel a little better about the night.

Shot my first NFAA 300 round tournament this weekend. It was a 2 day great lakes sectional tournament.

Yesterday I shot a disappointing 269 10x on the first day. Disappointing because I wanted to shoot at least a 270. I figured out a few things though and rebounded with a 274 12x today (a new PB in competition).

I also met another stringwalker (compound) who had been doing it for 25 + years and was able to pick his brain a bit at the end of the day for a few tips.

All in a all a good warm up for Louisville in a few weeks.

Way to go Scott, keeping positive has helped me pull a normal score out of a really bad start. Congrats on the PB in competition.

Wish I knew BigCnyn, I haven't shot anything bigger than a league. Even at that I will shoot a 24 and 23 in warm-up and then when they call "this ones for score", shoot an 18 the first end!

I think what you are doing is probably the best thing, shooting them.

Last 2 league nights I shot my same old 259 both times. I did pull one out like I said above. Had an 80 the first 4 ends then finished with a 92 and a 87. It won't be long I'll put one together, ...I hope. :)

What hurt was my arch nemesis here, who I go back and forth with at 3-D, came to his 3rd blue spot shoot with his wood recurve and beat me with a 267. Dang that guy is a good shot.

Mark, that is nice! Now that you've shot a couple, your brain is programed to accept it as good and natural so go ahead and shoot them all the time. :)

I am tired of 259's (oh wait, I shot a 258 since then) so today I got to thinking, and decided not to keep shooting a less than desirable set-up. I am still 5-6 inches below the face and using arrows that aren't tuned to my bow. The latter because I was reluctant to spend more money on something that just started out as a filler/form tuner till Field starts back up.

So I keyed up Tuning for Tens today and went and got some arrows that are spined for my bow at 32" so I keep the weight and length I need to get on the paper. Just finished the tune and everything looks good. I only have 14 yards that I can shoot here without daylight, so will hit the range tomorrow and see where my new point on is.

Hoping that spending some money will gain me some points, ever hear of anyone doing that? ha ha

Thank, Glynn!

What arrows did you get? What were you shooting before?

Mark

Glynn Sluder

I went with aluminum to get weight and length, trying to get the point up on the face. Bought the Easton 500's thinking even at 32" they would be okay at 42-44# on the fingers.

I could see they were a little weak even with feathers, but had spent the money and was shooting OK with them. Got tired of OK yesterday and after Rusty mentioned Tuning for Tens decided to start over. Bareshaft at 5 yds. through paper had a 6 inch tear! yikes. Also, even after all the advice, I could not give up my comfortable anchor. I did get a better locked down stretch going, but was still floating 5-6 inches under the face.

Went back to Gander and got the 400 Gamegetters. 32", 200 gr. up front, moved the nock point up a bit and presto!, could shoot the whole game with bareshafts. Reset the plunger spring and got them hitting down the middle. Found out today that this also puts my point at 6 o'clock on the 1 ring.

So with some of that "new stuff" confidence you sometimes get, I went to the range today and shot a game with 2 other guys to make it a little more stressful, not a lot. Shot a 270-12X for a PB in practice. Hope to do as well or better come Tuesday night.

At our range, to keep the walls from getting cluttered, they only put up the target of the "Top Gun" in whatever class was shot. My competitor had taken over the spot with his 267 Thursday, but with my witnessed game today I got put back up in Men's Traditional. I know he's going to really come after me now. :) Gotta keep moving!

Not an NFAA 300 but I shot a FITA 300 round as a warm up for the NAA tourney this week. Not my finest showing. I started a bit weak but finished well for a 510.

My plan is to shoot one again tonight on my 450 league. Basically shoot my 450 for score plus an additional 5 ends.

I am trying to get ready to go to State(nfaa). Never been to a big shoot like this one. I even gave up Diet Mtn. Dew.. really hard right now in my world.. but, shot 2 full 300s over the weekend, 1 Saturday 284, then 1 on Sunday for my new personal Best(PRACTICE) 289 17 xs on the 5 spot target.. Scott, all of us who post and many more who don't are pulling for you to shoot well in the NAA tourney. We want the rest of the world to see your and Mikes scores on that board and know that while we may not have a lot of shooters in the US compared to them, we still have very good shooters. All the best to you.

BigCnyn, what the heck can you say about incredible shooting like that? Sounds like you are going to State with a lot of confidence too. I know I am not the only one here who is so inspired by you "regular, good ole boys" and your fantastic shooting. It really pumps me up.

Guess I gotta up my "goal" again too, already hit it.

Great shooting BC. That 278 is stout.

Wow did I (fill in your choice of word for sucking) this weekend at the nationals. Starting last week I have been having some "shot issues" that I just have not worked out yet. I'm not missing the whole target or anything, just a generally inconsistency. I was shooting around 250-260 on the FITA face and dropped to like 235-240 in a single week. Ended up shooting 490 and 465.

I'm confident it is not the bow or the arrows and is just the person pulling the string. I just need to work it out, hopefully before Louisville this coming weekend. Heck of a time for a slump.

You would have thought I had sprayed my arrows with 10 ring repellant as much as I missed it.

Glynn Sluder
03-09-2009, 04:42 PM
BigCnyn, that really rocks. 278 under State Championship pressure is good stuff. You have a lot to be proud of there. I'm tickled and I haven't even met you. :)

Scott, I think everyone from novice to champion knows that horrible feeling and inner voice asking "what the heck am I doing wrong?" Something simple, you just need to get confident again so you shoot calmly at Louisville. If I'm spraying a little out into the 3's and such it's usually head position or anchor. Even Peeking at a shot I'm sure I'll hit. :)

I shot a 265 at league Thursday. Really wanted to hit 270 again with my main competitor there, but think I rattled him a little anyway and he shot a 262. What a blast.

I'll go shoot downstairs in a few (kids just went to bed) and hopefully get up early enough to shoot at the club the next few mornings.

Mark, it is downright contagious, huh?

A couple of us were talking tonight at the range about practice. Sometimes I am so busy that the only time I shoot is league night for score. That is not the best time to be trying, learning, changing, discovering, things if you are wanting to always best your last game. But at least it is happening. I haven't shot a game in quite awhile without having an epiphany of some sort or even advice from the peanut gallery, like a reminder to follow through.

One way or another, gotta spend some time sending arrows downrange to make progress.

Way to go tonight Mark!

I shot a 249 tonight. I am having some trouble with the plunger on my bow, and for my first couple ends I missed right a lot. I adjusted the plunger and started shooting a lot better. My game scores were 73 90 86, for a total of 249.

Hey Mark, your last two games are nice, going to have to keep raising your goal at that rate.

I shot the last game of our club league tonight, a 247, and I couldn't leave fast enough. Too busy to do any practice, and spring weather has me thinking about Field all the time too. The bow I've been using indoors is my Field bow cranked down, or was that is till I got home and put it back at 47#.

I need to get a bow dedicated to indoors, but that may not happen for awhile now. From here to Sept. it's Field, 3-D, and intense elk bow preparation. I may get talked into an indoor league if I find a bow, but need a break for now.

I use the DAS shorty plunger from 3Rivers, in that price range they probably all work as well as the other.

Mark Hedges
03-24-2009, 06:35 PM
Is everyone else done?

Well tonight was my last night of winter league. I shot a 88 90 88 for a total of 266. I was able to break 260, which was my final goal for the league this year, so I am pretty pleased!

Mark, real nice finish there buddy. 266 in League is fantastic!

I'm done indoors for now, will move over to the 3-D thread and probably start talking some Field too.

They bumped the monthly rate at the indoor range starting April, that doesn't make any sense to me, but I'm not running it.

Check in next December. :)

Well after a few good practice sessions I shot a local (MAA) indoor tournament today. I shot a nice 271 with 12 x's.

After the struggles i had for about a month that 271 felt like a 290.

My wife shot really well too with a 258 8x which breaks her previous state record.

Have to wait a week or so to find out where the chips fell in terms of where I placed. If Jim shoots, I imagine second. :)

Looks like I'm late joining the thread. I'm a geographical bachelor in Northern Virginia right now so I'm able to shoot in 3 different leagues. I'm fortunate that there are 3 indoor facilities with 35 miles of me. My average has been 273 since Christmas but today I slipped a bit. I shot 265 12x for second. Paul Vogel (current NFAA indoor champ) spanked me. He was 146 12x at the half and dropped a few the second half. He ended up with a 285 24x.

Scooter
