View Full Version : Best place for point of aim

I was wondering what point of aim you guys use. Without stringwalking, is it possible to get the arrow point on at 20 yards? I shoot three under and the best I have been able to get (at about 14 grains per pound) is holding at 6 oclock on the target face, right on the outside edge of the one ring.

Is there an advantage to being point on? Or does it not really matter where you hold, as long as you are able to be consistant?

Mark,

In my experience holding on the middle of the target isn't necessary. On the NFAA Field course I shoot 4 different size faces (20, 35, 50 & 65 cm) from 20 feet to 80 yards. My face walking technique is to get the arrow on or close to the target faces at each distance. I don't make it in every case but am usually within one scoring ring. For example: at 35 yards I hold one scoring ring under the 50 cm face; at 70 yards I'm holding one scoring ring above the 65 cm face. These are with different anchors by the way.

My point is, you don't have to be on the X to be able to shoot well, just on or close enough to the target to be holding a consistent elevation. YMMV!

Dave

PS: Indoors (20 yards) I hold at 5 O'Clock on the blue of the multi colored 40 cm face.

I don't think it matters, as long as you can be consistent. That said, remember the saying about Aim small, miss small? Experiment and see how you do best. I try to make sure that I am always holding at 6 o'clock, no matter how far up or down from the bull. While I was trying to establish this with a new bow, I took 5-spot and placed it at the point where I needed to hold in order to hit in the bull so I would be reinforcing in my mind the picture I wanted to have when I finally got the poa I wanted. I found that I was able to score better with the "small" aiming point the 5-spot provided than I did when I tried to hold on the same spot without the aid of the 5-spot. I conclude that, for me, it is better if I can hold at 6 under the bull than trying to have an unmarked spot in the blue where I am trying to be consistent with my hold.

For me lately I have been stringwalking and shooting a 5 spot NFAA target. I aim at the bottom of the blue and stack the circles of the spot (blue) and arrow as a figure 8. This seems to work pretty well right now.

I have gotten to true point on, for me. I start the sequence by looking at the arrow point as it comes back, and into the anchor, back tension phase. I can see the target in the unfocused view, I then line things up with the target out of focus, getting the point on. I shift at that point to get the X in focus, and stay there for the fire sequence, if that helps.

Was that hard to do? How do you anchor?

I anchor 3 under middle finger in the corner w/ my pointer finger in a cheek bone point. I shoot 42@30,, shooting 2413 x7s, they are full length. The points are standard 110 NIBB but i use #2 size lead shot and hot melt glue to get them at 200 grains. I have my nock point at 7/16 high. the bow tuned nearly center shot, and that's it..
