Heres a little project I whipped up this week.
Made a riser from a hickory stave that was meant to be made into a selfbow. Started out like this:

This is it roughed out a little. I was able to bolt the limbs on and shoot it actually.

All finished. I painted it partly because it's a hunting but mostly I didn't want it to look like an AIM bow.

Very nice work Harpman !
What sort of limbs did you use on ?

This bow shoots very nice !! The riser is 17" long and is equiped with Hoyt 40# long wood core limbs, wich work out to be 62" long and 47 pounds @ 28". It took me about 5 hours to make. I put a bristle rest on so even arrows with vanes fly well.

Hello,
I´m new to this forun but have been reading it for some time, good information.
Todd, nice work. Would you please answer some questions:

1- How do you hold the limbs? Do you have a picture of it?
2- How do you tiller it? Is it fixed or you can regulate it?

Thank you very much,

Martín

Hello Beleg2, I used 1/2" bolts to hold the limbs down, but they are ground down to just under 3/8" where the limb notch goes in. This is done off center to provide lateral limb adjusting. All you have to do is turn the bolt to align the limbs and by turning the nut you can adjust the tiller and poundage. I also drill a 9/16" hole a 1/4" deep in the riser to receive the dovetail button on ILF limbs. Actually it is a very simple system. Will try to post pictures latter.

Todd,
I´ve been thinking about your wooden riser and have another question.
Where is the pivot point of the limb?
Is it on the dovetail button or on the limb?
Thanks
Martin

Hello Martin

To answer your last question, the limb pivots on the limb itself. The dovetail button is nothing more than an alignment dowel. Here are some pictures of another bow I just made. The riser is from the same piece of wood as the other bow. This one is 21" long to make a 66" bow using the hoyt long limbs. The limb angles are slightly different making the limb tips more forward (seen when unbraced). Poundage is 50 at 28". I still haven"t sanded this one yet. These bows are not works of art, but were never meant to be. They do perform great. More like work horses.

Here are some pictures

That is not a crack in the handle. It is just a pencil line.

Todd,
I beg your pardon but I have been in Buenos Aires (700 km fron home) for two day. I get a pair of KAPs Challenger 68” 36# for my wooden warf (Wwarf?).
Thank you for the pictures, now I see it better, but please forgive me because I have some more questions:
1- Is it necessary to make the bolt to provide lateral limb adjustment? When I made my other risers, I use fix the limb with a bolt and two dowels and correct the alignment only once, when I glue those parts.
2- How do you know the correct angle for the limb? As I can see in you pictures the limb on the short riser have a 22º and the long one 18º.
3- Whay about some rubber O-rings on the dovetail button for a snug fit?
I will try to make a short riser next week and let you know.
Thank you very much
Martin

I will try to answer your questions:

1) You don't have to use my system to align your limbs. The way you are doing it seems fine. The reason I use my offset bolt is so that I don't have to be exactly perfect when laying out and drilling my holes in the riser. By the way these risers are made using only a hand held cicular saw, drill press, and files/sandpaper. I grind the bolts by hand on a bench grinder. You can use a 3/8" bolt if you can get the alignment right.

2) Regarding limb angles, I lay it out by setting the string nocks (when the bow is unbraced) to be inline with the front side of the riser (the side away from the shooter) or set slightly ahead of the riser. On the 21" riser the limb tips are about 1 1/2" ahead the riser when unbraced.

3) O-rings around the dovetail button sounds like a good idea. Perhaps not needed but would make a snug fit.

Hope this helps
Todd

Todd,
Thanks for your answers.
I will made a riser like your next week, as I love wood working I will make another one to accept ILF limbs. Today I have made a prototype of this fitting on a piece of wood. If it works may be a good option as you only need two washers and some glue. As soon as I can get some pictures I will post them.
Here in Argentina compound rider aren´t cheap, so a “classic” Warf is not a low cost option.
Thanks again.
Martin

PS: I think we are alone. No one post for some time.
