View Full Version : Changing Recurve Grip
I wanted to ask if anyone has made modifications to their grip? I know you guys tinker all the time, so I'll assume you have. In any case, what I want to do is change my medium grip to a high wrist position. I don't really want to afford a new riser for my takedown. What I was thinking was by adding layers of moleskin on the grip under the palm until I get it where I want. Probably, I would have to then cover the mole skin with a leather or some type of wrap. Do you think this would work. I hope this was clear enough. I wanted to see what your collective take might be on this. I have laid myself bare to the hive collective.
Thanks in advance.

It is not realy difficult to make a grip
I've done a lot for my Radian and my Avalon (changing medium for higher)
I've done a lot of longbows too
I try to explain to you, in English it's very dificult for me.....
You take a peace of wood, same size than your riser ( without grip), and two others, one in each side, you glue all three and you model it with a rasp
I do it in three pieces
It's realy easy
On what bow do you want to do that ?
El Lobo,
I want to change a medium wrist recurve grip by just building up the material on the grip(riser) to create a high wrist position. I hold at a high wrist position as it is. The grip feels good as it is, but I wanted to add as little additional material to it as possible. If this idea is not really a way to go, I do not want to change the rise permanently. I can live with how it is. What you suggested is what I've done to a longbow that I have.
Thanks

What kind of take down is it?
Scooter-That is prety near the Identical thing that I do.
if its a nice wood riser masking tape can be put on the wood to protect it. the epoxie sticks to the tape
and can be knocked off if the need ever arose.
TB4u,
Mike Beckwith is a local bowyer who made it. I love the bow. It's a resin impregnated phenolic something or other. It's not real pretty wood(don't even know if it is wood), but is black. Riser is mostly black with Osage/carbon limbs. It is a heavy riser which I really liked.
My wife's bow has 17 laminations in it and is a work of art made by Gary Bassett. Beautiful craftmanship and I wouldn't consider it on hers. If I miss my deer, I just club them with the bow! LOL

El Lobo,
on a Radian? you must have a far bigger hand than mine. I had to devise a way of making a replaceable grip that did not keep breaking all the time for being too thin on the left side.
Wrote an article about it for Archery Focus, too, it was published in the Sept-Oct 2003 (or was it 2002?) issue I think.

I have a realy little hand, but I shout a Border Black Douglas for a long time when I began in Archerie ( with a very high grip ) and from there, it's was very inconfortable for me to shoot low or medium grip after

OB, that bow sounds like its right up my alley. I love the looks of a well crafted riser, but Ill take utility any day.
Like I said, You can use masking tape to protect you riser, or even a couple layers to be sure, but cover PAST what you intend to put th putty on and after its dried tear off the excess. Works like a charm.
Thanks. I'll give that a try. I'm a bit leery of making permanent changes. As the rise is it works well, I want to try to build it up until I can afford another riser from Mike. Thanks again for taking the time with this.
