View Full Version : Anyone shoot 2 fingers?

I shoot split finger. I have noticed that when I shoot, my bottom finger is not really holding that much of the string. It was just knid of laying on the string. I figured that it could not be helping all that much, and that it might just be hindering a smoother release. This afternoon, I tried shooting with just two fingers. I had pretty good results, but it just could have been a good day. Has anyone else tried this or shoot consistently this way?

I've played around with it a little, but not much. There is a guy named Scott Anzack, or something like that who has a video out. He shoots a very heavy bow two under. He does it by wearing a glove, and then a tab over it. He appears to be an excellent shot.

Theoretically it should be good. In fact, that is the way I shoot my compound fingers. But with any draw weight, it seems like it would be very hard on the fingers over time.

Be curious to hear from others.

Just 2 fingers split is the old Flemish style from England. I have heard that you get a smoother release. I have tryed it before, but keeped going back to 3 split fingers.

My bottom finger is quite loose as well. It is sometimes difficult to handle when pulling a winter glove over my shooting glove. Strange as it is, I do not have problems with lacking consistancy. Most likely I shoot '2½' finger with my 65# recurve. It just works.

Torsten, Gary Sentman, and fairly noted long bow shooter here in the States, basically shoots like you. I think he says something like 45% on the top finger, 40% on the middle, and 15% of the pull on the third finger. I may be a little off on the %, but that is the gist of it. His third finger sort of "rides" the string. He does, however, shoot fairly heavy bows.

Braden, the way you explained your top finger is what i do. It is extremely lose on the string. I really use it as a second anchor point. Middle finger in corner of mouth and top finger touches my nose.

We really should get together oneday and shoot you live in Ridgeland and me in Brandon. I would like to meet you. I will be gone for about a week but upon my return lets talk.

When I shoot the short bear super mag. I shoot 2 under, index and ring, because of finger pinch on such a short bow.......It's a 65# bow and it does work on the digits a bit over time........

As I have mentioned before in a previous thread, i also shoot with two fingers. When i used to shoot compound i shot three under but my lower finger only touched the string (see my avatar above). Now i shoot longbow i have to shoot mediterranian. I shoot a 70" bow but i am tall and have a 31" draw and i have a real problem with finger pinch, i find the finger above the nock feels like its getting in the way so i straighten it up.. This means that i am still really shooting two fingers under. I find that this way of shooting reduces the finger pinch but it does take some time to get used to.
I used to regularly shoot with a guy who shot a #60 compound off one finger. This gave him a really clean loose but by the end of the day he used to get shooting pains up his forearm. I imagine it was due to the strain on the tendon.

Hey Braden,

I too shoot the way you describe if you remember us talking about that down in Learned. I can not release properly with just two fingers. It's like that third finger is my sonar.

BTW, there is a traditional shoot next weekend over in Yazoo City. Interested in going?

Bradon -

Did you know that the Archersreference describes a two finger release for Olypmic shooters? Yup. Mr. Elliot states that most Olympic shooters, hold 85% of the draw weight with their middle and ring fingers. That leaves 15% for the index finger. Heck, I've been shooting that way since before I could spell Olympoc, ;). Also sounds like a lot of guys just have the third (ring) finger going along for the ride, hell I wish I could.. IMHO, both are basically two finger releases.

Heres the deal, IMHO anyway, the fewer contact points on the string the faster/cleaner the release. Only problemn with a true two fingered release, is that it's too easy to twist the fingers around the string, torquing it. Now, add a third finger, whether it does any real work or not, it acts as a stabilizing influence, ie the hand/finger can't twist as easily.

While shooting many indoor rounds lately with 40# limbs, I've evolved into shooting as Viper described. Middle and ring finger under and index finger on top. I don't think I even have 10% on the index finger. I've also been using an aperture sight lately and have noticed a decrease in those pesky flyers. Suffice to say my scores have skyrocketed. Is it the aperture sight, is it my form/release getting cleaned-up, or is it maybe just a little of both?

Well, I've been shooting with two fingers for a couple of days. My shooting has really improved, but I'm not quite sure that my fingers can take it. It is not rubbing my fingers; it just seems to being stressing the ligaments too much. I sure hope that things will toughen up, because my accuracy has greatly improved.
