First off Welcome aboard
There are basically 3 types of "aiming"
instinctive,gap/split vision,and point of aim.
After spending yrs with "instinctive" and only reaching a relatively short effective range I gave the gap/splitvision a try.Wish I had tried that yrs ago. After a little while once ya get the hang of it it actually becomes almost the same thing as instinctive anyway just with a more deliberate approach.
Which ever style of "aiming" YOU chose good form that is repeatable is a must. There are some guys here that are better at explaining it than I and have helped me out alot. Good luck

Aximilli -
Kinda a loaded qurestion!
Start here: http://www.archersreference.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/
Basics are basics.
Then you'll need to find a place to shoot, check the yellow/white pages for a local range, yes, they're out there. You local sporting goods, camping/hunting stores might know of some. You really have to see, as in - in person, to see what is going on, and what tickles your fancy.
Viper out.

Get yourself a teacher or mentor.
Even a couple of hours of tuition when you start out will save you a lot of problems later. Get to a club and ask questions. The answers may sometimes be different from different people but it will all help.
As for your choice of bow. Start with something simple like an unsighted recurve with a simple rest. Borrow it from a club if you can. Get the hang of shooting untill you have confidence in yourself, and then get down to the local shop and try a few different bows out. Only you will know what suits you best but dont fall into the trap of buying the shinyest toy in the shop.
Keep visiting this site. There are a lot of guys here who really know their archery.
Above all enjoy the journey that you are setting out on. Archery can and will, become a big part of your life if you want it to.

You are at the most intriguing part of your archery journey. Many different types of bows and many different "games" to play. There's lots of territory to travel when asking about longbow to compound. All depends on what your initial interests might be. If you think you'd like the challenge of shooting very, very precisely when target shooting... the compound is the choice. If you're leaning towards a more basic foundational learning of archery... the recurve or longbow may be what you're looking for.
As Eaglearcher has already mentioned... hang out at a local archery shop/shooting range and archery club as well. No better way to get acquainted than hands-on stuff. We're all here to travel with you in your journey. :)
Aximilii,
What type of gear are you starting out with? Longbow?, Recurve?, Arrows?
