View Full Version : Thoughts on an informal tournament

We had a guy (Josh Hurt) speaking at our church, he suggested having socials based on what you like to do and that can expose your non-christian associates to believers. Easier to get them with food on Friday than a Sermon on Sunday, I guess.

Let me know how to improve this idea:

A three month tournament, July - September. Each month everyone shoots the NFAA 20 Yard 40cm target (our local range is indoor 20 yards) and posts their scores whenever they have them. The "lead score" may change as people shoot better. If you shoot worse no one knows! ;)

The scores are kept for the first 3 weeks of the month and the 4th week we have a cookout where the best score gets to serve the other contestants. Each month is a "new" tournament so there is a chance to do better in the short term.

Ideas?

One of the big mistakes churches have made in the last 40 years is expecting the culture to beat a door to their path. We thought, if we hava a great worship service, the seekers will come to us. Unfortunately, they have seen so much hypocrisy in the average Christian, and the church services seemed to be reduced to "rule keeping", that they really are not interested.

So, we should do as Christ did. We should go to them. That makes sense.

As for your specific idea, my first concern would be that those who do not come out to this forum might wonder why we would do it here, under this forum, as opposed to the main group. I am afraid they might think we are being exclusive, and clickish. Of course I understand that is not your motive.

Anything we can do to expose others to Christ would be great. I guess I would just like to think on it. I am curious to see what others think.

By the way, great to have you out here.

Good to be here. My original plan was to post it to the regular forum. However, as my focus was a way to interact with non-Christians I didn't want anyone to feel as if I was being dishonest in my intentions.

I have no doubt your intentions are good, and please don't think I'n down on the idea. All of us need to be thinking about how we can best embrace our friends who have not made any real spiritual committment, and encourage them to give it an honest look. I just wanted to think out loud about any negatives as well as positives. :)

That thinking out loud is exactly what I'm looking for. Here are some more questions and thoughts.

Should there be a minimal entry fee, say $2-$5? Money given to a local charity or something each month, or something similar.

What rules are required, and how can we keep them to the bare essentials? So far I have distance, target.
-- 60 arrows.
-- Any recurve/longbow, any gadgets. (Want to be inclusive of the other recurvers)

Anything else? I've never been in or run an archery tourney before.

ciao!

Entry fee?

Well, my feeling on that is...yes, everything generally does cost something...BUT, I believe if this is a mission, it should be funded and supported by church money and volunteers.

The only thing I would do is have a box available for donations which would be given freely rather than a required fee.

You will probably have a few people donating more than the original 2$ to 5$ entry fee with a few others not paying anything. It will probably all balance out and if it doesn't...remember it is a labor of love.

Entry fee?

My thought is that the month's high score gets to serve at the cookout and the low score gets to pick the charity the entry fee goes to. No mark up or anything, all of it goes.

Lemme know if you have any thoughts. Black Wolf's comment about the entry fee is appropriate, I just generally feel uncomfortable asking that way. Since everyone knows what will happen to the money they may pitch in extra anyway.

leam,

I'm not sure if you understood what I meant by a donation box.

It wouldn't be passed around like a donation plate. It would just sit there by the registration table with the word "Donations" written on it.

Jesus nor the diciples ever chraged a fee when they were spreading the Word.

I also don't really see anything wrong with your ideas either. You will know what is the right direction to go.

I think it is awesome what you are trying to do.

There was a lady that went by the name Camp Cook here, who has been doing something simular for years. I wish she would chime in here.

There was an article written about her and her husband. I'll see if I can find it and post it for you.
